Does anyone have any tips on removing the ignition lock (1100RS). Yes the key has turned up missing. Don't ask.

Have you got a good locksmith that could make you a new key from one of your side case latches?

As far as the ign switch removal, I have not done one but what I have read points to drilling out some "one time break away" type mounting bolts that hold it in place.

Best option is to have to a key made at a locksmith. If your bags aren't the same key as the bike tehn you can remove the seat lock (8mm box wrench on the nuts behind and Phillips on the screws in the front) and take that lock in to get a key made.

(And you might want to get a spare key or two made while you're there. Razz )

For what it will cost to get a lock smith to do it you can buy a complete lock set including ignition, gas cap and seat latch. Then it is easy to rekey the bags to match. This is just my opinion

Thanks for the replies. For what its worth all locks are keyed the same so I took a case to the locksmith and gat a key made. Unfortunately a key which unlocks the case doesn't do the same to the ignition lock (or fuel and seat lock). The locksmith did tell me this may happen as their are 5 cutouts on the key and the case only uses two. I am loath to do the same thing with the seat lock as it may not do the ignition either. Looks like I will have to get my dealer to order a new key from the Fatherland. Will take two weeks though. Major bummer, will have to be a cager in Tassy.

Sounds like somebody messed with your case lock cores. -->ALL<-- of the K bike lock cores have five. Take the seat lock in.

Hi, John,
Years ago I had my ignition lock replaced. The old bolts were drilled out. They are not "breakaway" bolts, but they have a special head and it takes a BMW special tool to install them. If they are installed correctly, they cannot be unscrewed and are drilled out. Mine were obviously not installed correctly as they vibrated out on the way to a rally. When I got home, I simply cut slots so I could install (and remove) them with a big screwdriver, then installed them with a drop of blue Loctite. I sold that bike in 2006 (with 122k miles) and the ignition switch is still in the bike doing its job at about 150k miles.

The bolts can be drilled. you need a SHARP, QUALITY drill & plenty of pressure. One CANNOT, however, remove the lock barrel without a good key.
If you need a key, go to any BMW dealer with model & frame number they WILL have the key code (unless the locks have been changed). The 5 digit code should be understood by the locksmith.
