Hello,I have a 86 K75 that ran and started fine when I bought it last summer, but the previous owner did tell me he had replaced the starter relay with one from a Ford Mustang. While on a trip south,I came out of a restaurant and tried to start the bike. I heard a burning sound and slight odor of something burnt for a few seconds and than nothing. We bump started the bike the rest of the trip. Very embarrassing pushing the BMW with the Harleys running around everywhere and I have usually helped push them in the past. Back to the bike,I replaced the starter relay when I got home with the Bmw one and still nothing. I checked the relay and only have 9 volts to the relay. Relay works when you put 12 volts to it's control side directly and starter turns over fine. Checked clutch interlock switch(good) and load shedding relay can be heard making and breaking contacts when hitting start button. I understand there is a interlock circuit diode to ensure that the clutch switch can override the neutral switch, but I am unable to find it in the instrument panel to check it and don't know if this could be the problem. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks,Jim

The clutch switch doesn't go to the instrument cluster. If goes down under the tank and connects to the main wiring harness. If the clutch witch is working then you can start the bike without an instrument cluster.

Thanks,I unplugged the clutch switch under the tank and ohmmed out the terminals with the clutch applied and it checked good. Still I have only 9 volts to the starter relay with a fully charged battery. If it should start without an instrument cluster, the only other thing listed in the Haynes manual is the gear position indicator switch to check. I haven't found it's location. I have never had any kind of starting problems with any previous BMW'S,it has me puzzled. My K1100LT has more then twice as many miles (94K) with no problems. Thanks,I'll keep looking. Jim

Your gear pos switch is on the back of the tranny and connects via a five way tube shaped connector on the right of the bike below the back of the fuel tank.

It cant be your gear pos switch as that drives your gear indicator which drives the diode.

Is the gear indicator and neutral light working OK if you change gears with the bike switched on..its not directly related to your problem, i'm just curious !!!

I'd disconnect the cluster and see if the signal is being lost in there, possily through a failed diode. there is a large multipin plug under the cluster, pull it off and give it a go.

Drake has kindly posted wiring diagrams here.. http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6258

If you dont have 12v on your clutch switch then check back to the fuse and follow it forward to the switch, it may be a corroded connection giving hassles.

Hope it helps
