Took the poor 1100lt to the mountains(we dont have real moutains in erin) and I have to say,the brick is an amazing high speed touring weapon.I really dont give a crap if people think its not sporty enough,because it has no problem keeping up and stopping with the best of my riding pals.Before the trip the plugs and fuel filter were replaced, and I put synthetic gear oil in the trans- just to note,the trans seems to be the week link in the package.but leaving it in 4th and using the engine moe seemed to work just fine thanks.In one of your tech articles you advised preloading the shifter to help with false neutrals etc,and it cured 95% of the bad shifting issues.We had only one day of poor weather and the areodynamics of the fairing and windshield are truley incredible with dead air space and removal of face shield water at the same time,cant say that about my goldwing!Ithink thats probably enough praise for now,the darn thing may start acting up if it catches a wiff of this column.Ride safe! Its not snowing yet.

Good morning JMATT....

Glad your "romp" was a good one !! Now that you know the way south consider joining us in May at HM-lll !

Re your "shifting experience"... please remember that the BMW is a 'dry clutch" unlike the Japanese bikes, and shifting will always be a bit less smooth with that little "stutter" between gears. However, you also have to be sure that the engine output shaft spline, as well as the transmission output splines are properly and regularly lubed. Check the "stickies" on this site as well as elsewhere on the Internet ( ie: ibmwr/tech for example ) to see how this is done. My K1100LT is new to me and despite it being December, I am about to go in and begin the "Spring prep" by lubing splines. This is something I do every year for my '76 R100/7 and one of the reasons it has served me so faithfully for as many years as it has. If I continue and extend this care to the "K" then it will be here and running well for just as long !

There are many more areas to be consistently maintained, but I believe the "splines" are the most critical of the "regular" maintenance items !

Welcome to the site jmatt. My feelings about my K1100LT pretty much match yours.

Mine does not have expensive tires or shock, but I'm able to keep up with my "boy-racer" pals and their ST's and RT's on our annual trips.

False neutrals only occur between 4-5 for me. If I remember to not use the clutch on that shift, I never miss it.
