Friend of mine just bought a 1996 K1100LT (?) from a dealer and he came and did a main service at my place.

Under the seat the sticker said it was a K1100GT , anyone heard of this? I think, it also had 'special edition' next to the model name.

The bike had Grand Turismo written on the paintwork above the rear light. But there was a chrome 'LT' on the front of the fairing. The top box lid matched the blue paint scheme but the panniers were standard black plastic.

Other than that is looks like a normal LT, it did not have an aerial or radio fitted, though it had the domed pocket lid.

It has heated grips, hazards and electric windscreen button by the ignition + one dummy button.

There are two buttons either side of the map light. The outermost of the pair are dummies but the innermost appear to be working but they don't have any function...anyone familiar with these and can suggest what they do?

Any thoughts, as I did not think BMW did a K1100GT or did BMW always write K1100GT or the LT on their stickers?

Unless I can find the wire that connects my mobile to the computer I am afraid there are no photos (not that they were much good anyway).

Hi, Beinn,
Where are you? That may have some bearing on what came on the bike. As an example, all USA K1100 bikes came with oxygen sensors, They did not have the CO pots which many Euro bikes did. As I remember, all the USA K1100LT's (up to '97 models) had ABS brakes, color matched bags and topcase and all had radio and heated grips. The basic '97 LT had ABS brakes, black bags, no radio nor heated grips if I remember correctly. The Special Edition, in the USA, had different paint (different each year), the tachometer said "special edition" and both the speedo and tach did not have the horizontal lines and the needles moved through a greater angle than those on the normal instruments. But basically, the bikes are the same. There are no mechanical differences.

Don't know if this will be helpful.
Mines an LT - SE
It has four buttons, two either side of the light, none of which do anything, the electric screen button is green and on the left bar along with the grey radio buttons.
On the buttons near the ignition it has ABS / Hazards / Heated grips, (rocker switch with two positions)
LT badge on the front fairing and to the best of my knowledge nothing on the rear above the light, will check tomorrow if I remember to Smile

Hi Phil + m1ks

The bike is based the in UK. I believe is is not an import, but I will check further. The speedo and tacho has horizontal lines and does not have the wording special edition.

The ABS has been removed from the bike but the mounting are still there so I assume it would have originally had ABS. The registration indicates it to be 1995-1996 and I believe it was 1996. The paint was Mauritius Blue, which might have been called Pearl Blue in the US.

The bike looks almost the same as this one except - black touring paniers, ABS (removed, only mountings left), seat has been recovered in black as a confort seat and the front fork seal had a plastic L_shaped cover. Also the name of the blue colour sheme is not the same though the blue looks the same colour. http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/photos/schemephotos/K1100LT%20Koenigs%20Blue.JPG.

Thanks m1ks, it is nice to know the you also have four useless button by the map light.
