Rode about 40 miles yesterday with my friend on a ninety something ST1100, swapping for a little while. Beautiful bike, more like an RS. This is what Honda put up against BMW when Clinton was president. It felt a lot tighter than my LT, with similar power and very smooth shifting. I'm feeling a little conflicted, like I want to go hang around in his driveway. Talk me down. _________________ Jim

Well, Jim, as a former owner of two ST1100's, I won't be the one to talk you down. My brother still owns one and rode it out west with me. Several photos here: http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7509
Mine were "pennies to maintain" and 99% trouble-free. Compared to my RS, which may be "pennies to maintain", but Beaucoup More Wampum to keep on the road due to breakdowns. OTG is not the only one to come around to this realization.
Years ago, I offered my comparo between the ST and RS on this site, but it's long-since been purged. Briefly: The RS is faster, more nimble, and more high-strung. The ST is smoother, only slightly less fast and nimble, and with it's 7.4 gallon fuel tank has a range of over 300 miles. I'm not surprised you found it lighter and smoother than your LT.
I decided on my RS mostly because after twelve years on ST's, I was ready for a change and it had ABS.
If I were in the market today, I would be checking out the late-model ST1300's. Everything the ST1100 was but lighter and faster. The early models had engine heat isssues, but I understand that has been resolved since 2006. I've seen low-mileage 2007 ABS versions for sale for around eight large. Very tempting... _________________ tlp

OK, Jim. STEP AWAY from the Honda.
Take a couple of deep breaths.
Make sure that your K1100 hasn't fallen over to gain your sympathy.
Would you REALLY want a bike that needs so little maintenance? What would you do with that extra time, ride?
Do you REALLY want a bike made by the company that manufactures the most ic engines on the planet?
A bike that has parts available from Honda's zillion dealers?
A bike that runs soooooooooo smooth?
I didn't think so. Now what is that guy's phone number? I just want to buy, I mean, warn him about you _________________ John & Cathy

Klink, I noticed in all of those photos, the ST was behind the K, was it because it arrived later?
I just posted this on the other ST1100 thread.
| Quote: | Those ST's are sweet bikes, but I was recently at my friendly local Honda dealer and saw what I thought was a new scooter or something, turned out to be an ST! Aside from a step through area, it looked like a scooter (no offense to those scooterist's among us). The seat height was really low and it just seemed too tame to be a serious sport tourer.
I like the older ones better.
|
But seriously I would consider one of those in a heart beat as a replacement for my beloved K should the need arise. _________________ Steve

It's pretty, Sanjiv - but very high maintenance. Perish the thought. _________________ Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the warning. I cant afford it anyway and I enjoy tinkering with my LT.
The thing is that when Johnny visited a couple of weeks back I pointed out an ST1100 to him. He looked at me as if I had molested a teenager and firmly pointed out that the K1100RS is the finest motobrick in the world...... and now he does this to me.....
Plotting my revenge.....

OK I suppose, if you don't mind a thousand miles between dealerships, "Many Grand to maintain," and gutless performance... _________________ tlp

The ST1300 has had a really bad rep in the UK for ages, when they first came out the police and paramedics changed over to them, then the accidents started, they would for no reason start to wobble at high speed (90+) to the point of ejecting the rider, the police got rid of them (and they were going to the extreme of cutting the headstock off them so they could not be ridden) and most of the paramedics have got rid too.
Honda did apparently sort it out for later ones but I had a 2007 model on loan when my RS was written off, it still did it, didnt feel stable at all and had LESS power than the RS, has to rev it hard to get moving and filtering/slow speed traffic was really bad, constant gear changes to keep the revs up so it was producing power or it juddered, it only had 2000 miles on it. I didnt feel comfortable taking it over 90.
It WAS well equiped though. _________________ 1999 K1100LTIC Smooth and Quiet Cruise, BFD & HID

Yes, I had heard something about that high-speed wobble issue. I thought it only occured above 110 mph, however. Good to know.
My current lust is the VFR1200F. I'll take mine in Seal Silver Metallic. With ABS. And the luggage. And the touring windscreen extension... _________________ tlp

Jim-
You need to try a v-twin (or L-twin in a Ducati). After riding a 1100 4 cyl you might be disappointed.
I think that the wide powerband of a multicylinder spoils us especially for how most of us use our K bikes. On a twin the "happy" engine speed is quite a bit narrower- too few revs and you feel like you are riding a paint shaker. Too high on the tach and it feels like it is running out of breath and power drops off.
Riding our son's Ducati is a good example- it has a happy range of about 3000 rpms- I have to shift much more often.
Now I do understand that Honda, the master engine designer and builder probably has balancers and other devices to smooth out the vibes on that 700 v-twin. But I would be interested in how the NT700 feels- it is heavy. _________________ John & Cathy

Too new, apparently.
Ah, yes - Honda is bringing the Deauville to the U.S. Not a bad concept and not a bad looking bike, but I can't see one for myself. MAYBE if they brought the Transalp here, I wouldn't mind that or the Varadero as a second bike. But they're both chain-drives. (Yeah, yeah, I know - no big deal.) But if BMW can build the big GS with a shaft, why can't Honda do it with the Varadero?...
DOH! Apparently they can! And with the V4!
But it sounds like until our global economy comes around, it may remain moto-vapor... _________________ tlp
