As my 97 LT is burning oil, yes I know that lots do, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to investigate replacing the valve stem oil seals in case this makes a difference. The bike uses about 1ltr every 1000 miles, livable with, but a pain on long trips!

would this be worthwhile and is it a do-able job for so-so amateur spanner man?

Thanks folks

They do not use valve seals. It cold be bad valve guides not seals. Did you do a wet and dry compression test?

I replaced the non-existent valve oil seals on my '93 motor when I had the head off.

OMG?? What kind of bullsh... you have heard in the past? part no. 7 .

@Adrian
I was also considering valve seal change. Head disassembly is required, also new head seal must be fitted. Rather complicated job to do if you don't have proper tools and own workshop.
My engine also burns oil but only until level drops do "dot" on the indicator. Something about 150ccm per 1000 kms. So I don't fill above the dot Wink.

Best regards,

How much oil? Like you say, many of them do and BM's can be "normal" still use a bit or smoke at startup. We used to have a demo K12LT with a few hundred mile on the clock and you had to wheel it outside to start it up!
