Very Happy

A guy walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check.

He marched straight up to the counter and said, 'Hi. You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job.'

The social worker behind the counter
said, ' Your timing is excellent. We just
got a job opening from a very wealthy
old man who wants a chauffeur and
bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.

You'll have to drive around in his 2008
Mercedes CL, and he will supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours meals will be provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips.

This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your job
assignment to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive.
A two-bedroom loft type apartment with plasma TV, stereo, bar, etc. located above the garage will be designated for your sole use and the salary is $200,000 a year.'

The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said,
'You're bullshittin' me!'

The social worker said, ' Yeah, well,
you started it.'

That's pretty funny. I think the assumption that people on welfare wouldn't rather have a good job is suspect though. And in this economy a lot of us, probably a lot of members here, if we haven't lost a job already, may have a hard time laughing about it.

When we lived in the NYC area, Cathy did homecare as an O.T. in the Bronx.

She would tell me of families that were 2nd generation welfare recipients. The only income that the children saw the father or mother get was what came in the mail.

Hi, John,
I've heard of it being third and maybe even fourth generation, now. Of course, I'm rather conservative in my views and would remember stuff like that.

My father died just after I turned 9. My mother (housewife, to that point), began teaching school. I also remember ADC (Aid to Dependent Children) checks. Both my sister and I went on to reasonably productive lives. But I'm about to start on it, big time. I signed up for Social Security last week. (Yes, I'm that old!)

We were so poor that we had food stamps when I was a kid.

My mom who was a single parent was working 2 jobs at the time as well.

That said, I am in full favor of mandatory drug testing for people who get welfare. You want your check this month? Pee in this cup.

My pops retired after 20 years as a fire fighter at 52. I ain't gonna make that as I raised hell and did not grow up until I was 30 or so and got a wee bit serious about life so I have to go full term on the work thing.
He's way North of me in Wisconsin and I've seen many 3rd & 4th gen recipients up there when I visit.
They live in horrible shacks & trailers. But, they got the best snow mobiles, most recent firearms = wildlife harvesting impliments, and fishing gear. They always are hunting or fishing or just hanging out.

I know it's wrong not to work if you can, You know contribute SOMETHING!! Build make or affect SOMETHING but at times, I just
wonder were things went so wrong. And why of course I still gotta work too.
WTF is wrong with me?

Never got welfare. I didn't even know we were poor, but we were. Never had new clothes, just hand-me-downs. Dad always worked, shoveled coal, worked in a grey iron foundry, rode a bus or walked to work.
Seldom did supper have meat, and often was creamed corn on a slice of bread. Didn't realize it at the time, but mom went without eating so us kids had food. She'd say "Go ahead and eat, I'm not hungry."
One time mom tried to get some assistance (during WWII while dad was drafted into the navy) and was turned down. We were always clean as was the house. The "house was too clean, you don't look like you need assistance" was the reason she was denied. Her answer was "Soap is cheap."
When I was first married and working, my income was only $15.00 a month above qualifying for assistance. But we had pride.
The word "pride" isn't in the welfare suckers vocabulary.
