I managed to check the level today and have a question...
Is the line on the dipstick a MAXimum or a MINimum?
If it's a MAXimum, will a level about an inch above it do any damage, short term (less than 250 miles)?
I must stress, this was not my doing, it's the first chance I had to check the level, since picking it up, the other week, looks like the previous owner may be a bit of a numpty.
Could this be the cause of the apparent "clutch boot" leak, rather than the boot perishing?
If it helps, on the 100 mile ride back, it was fine, no whine from the box to worry me and just the usual BMW shift requirement - deliberate action. It actually does nice clutchless up-changes (only tried a couple) and downshifting to 4th at 90mph (allegedly, officer ) was no problem and enabled really hard acceleration to about EEK mph and no sign of clutch slip.
TIA!

Uh-oh... this could be bad...
Better start looking for some way to suck the excess out - rather than have the hassle of draining it...

I don't think there's any risk. When I bought my K1100RS I rode it from Malibu to San Francisco where I put it on a lift at a friend's house and gave it a once over - only to discover that some bonehead at Ventura BMW who had recently serviced the bike for the prior owner had FILLED the gearbox. Sucked out the excess down to the right level and all has been well since then.
Did I mentiion that Ventura BMW also installed the front tire BACKWARDS?
I wouldn't recommend taking a bicycle there for service, much less a motorcycle. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi Jack,
Its a while since I heard NUMPTY mentioned.
If I didn’t know just what oil is in the box I’d be tempted to drain it and refill.
Now if you were from t’other side o th’hill, you could siphon the excess out and keep it till it needs topping up.

I'm not going to be doing many miles over the next week or so, then I'll be taking it up to Roy Gardiner for a service and a general go-over. In the mean time, I can look for suitable siphon devices - I'm not sucking on tubes!

Why not drain the oil into nice clean container. You'll be able to see if any debris exists before you take her for a checkout. _________________ ******************************

Hi,
It's been a long time since I lived in your part of the world ('77-'78 in Ireland), but I don't remember turkey basters being a common accessory in every household. If you can't find one, go to the chemist's and purchase an enema bulb. The tube will be long enough to reach the oil and you can remove sufficient liquid with just a few repetitions. _________________ Ride Safe,

Right... I found some stuff to remove some of the oil.
Originally it was about an inch above the mark. After removing about 3/4 of a pint, it's now about 1/4" above the mark.
I'll leave it there and it can be sorted when it's serviced in the next week, or so.
Now to get a pair of Avon Storms fitted, to replace the squared-off, worn-out Dragon GTSs it's wearing, ATM. _________________ Fr Jack

Well, several weeks on, It appears the drip was caused by the overfill. Since I drained that wee bit, it hasn't dripped at all.
Saved meself a couple of quid, there! _________________ Fr Jack

Good stuff that it's behaving. If you need a good syphon for this type of thing nip out to Screwfix (UK) and they do a metal bodied syphon for under a tenner. It's been a great help on our boat for all sorts.
Watch your bevel box filling level as well as someone I know did an R11 up to the top of the threads on the fill hole and it came out of the breather and added a nice sheen to the tyre. As both the gearbox and bevel work on the splash principle and have direct breathers, they don't usually blow "good" seals as it has somewhere else to exit. "Bad" seals go whether the level was correct or not.
