I do a lot of stuff outside of class through the web, getting my students on this commuter campus engaged with the material and one another.

For myself, I enjoy the dialogues on forums such as these and so I spend what some mmight consider to be an inordinate amount of time on a keyboard.

I'm currently hammering on the university's IT department for their incompetencies with little effect, and so excuse any frustration you infer from my comment.

But is there some technical way that we can pursue a thread that is filled with pictures--which are intrinsically welcome--when we want simply to view the comments that subsequently are made by viewers?

Waiting for 100 pictures to load for the seventh time gets a little expensive, timewise.

This is not a life-threatening issue, but just a small technical issue that perhaps could be addressed economically by the volunteer SA's. If it's too much too soon, I'll understand.

Yeah - what he said.

I'm almost totally computer illiterate - sorry I can't help you with this one. php is way beyond me - and I don't know how much stuff could be tweaked in the BB program even if one knew how to tweak it. A lot of the commentary would be somewhat worthless without the pix, though.

My computer has a cache that compares the page I go to with the page in the cache. Unless someone posts a new ride report with lots of pix, if the page hasn't changed, it just brings up the page in the cache - I think that's how it works.

What kind of service do you have? I have the Nation's Slowest DSL - provided by the Nation's Slowest ISP - Cavalier - soon to be replaced with something usable - like FIOS. Sometimes when I start loading a new post with lots of pix, I can either walk away and do something else, or bring up another window and work on something else while that post loads in the background.

.

Here's how ya do it:

If you use Firefox for your internet browser:
Tools -> Options -> Content Tab
Uncheck "Load images automatically"

If you use Internet Exploder:
Tools -> Internet Options: Advanced Tab
Scroll down to the "Multimedia" section
Uncheck "Show Pictures-ON"

PM me if this doesn't do the trick, or if you're using some other browser.

Regards,
Bill

There's also an application for Firefox that automatically minimizes "quoted" pictures so you only view them once.

what is the name of that add-on? after some searching on the firefox add-on site and google i can't seem to find one that claims to do that. and there aren't many it seems for bbcode forums even.

well, depending on the hardware of the laptop, it is just as likely the fault doesn't lie with ms as it does with the hardware vendors. but anyways, i hear that now that vista has been updated significantly it is much better.

however, i am eagerly awaiting windows 7. gonna be sweet. Very Happy

I'm sorry mate, but this is the second time in 2 years the laptop has crapped out...the first was a total wipe due to....you guessed it....vista!

I'll stick to my XP thanks. It's the FZ1 of OSs....and yes, pennies to maintain.

Vista is the BMW of OSs.

Everyone I know has had problems with that pos OS vista.

i'm not sure it is really reasonable to say an os broke a piece of hardware. in fact, i don't think one can say that. however, it is possible to say that a piece of software really wasn't supposed to be run on a particular piece of hardware (even if the vendor says it is) and the hardware then fails. but if you are saying that all of a sudden the os just stopped working then okay, software does fail sometimes. but to do it twice makes me wonder if there is something that is installed on it that is failing.

there is documentation out there (in lawsuits even) that shows that intel pressured ms to lower the requirements for the "vista compatible" approval. so many many many laptops and desktops were released that do not actually meet the original minimum requirements for the os. these pieces of hardware will not let you run vista at a reasonable clip. heck, somewhere around 30% of vista failures were originally attributable to nvidia even. then there was the fact that nvidia didn't get to implementing the virtualized video memory so then dx10 was dumbed down (search for virtualized to get to the relevant part).

also, nvidia had some serious issues with their video cards in the 8xxx series. check it out. so it could be that also. but i don't know anything about your laptops so i'm just guessing there.

my point, i don't know how the os killed the hardware. and by all accounts vista is much better now. but windows 7 is gonna be awesome.

i still run xp myself at work and at home. i skipped vista because it was more expensive and had no pay off for gaming originally. Smile

not trying to be an ass, i have no money in microsoft or vista, just saying. Smile

Not that this is the thread for discussing it, but as long as we're here.....
I am running XP on my desktop Dell with Intel proc, and have Vista on my laptop with AMD processor and no problems yet.

I jump between XP and Vista as seamlessly as I jump from the Bug-Eyed Brick to the Mystic Red Super Moto.
Very Happy

No problems with either.

I just so happen to have a full running copy of Windows 7...don't ask. Plausible deniability is king. If anyone is interested, let me know...It does seem to out score Vista...just takes some gettin used to.

I have 2 laptops with Vista and 3 pcs. 2 with XP and 1 with Windows 7. I'm starting to like Windows 7...
