|
|
Friends,
My rear brake light would intermittently turn on by itself. I fixed the problem and just finished replacing front brake micro-switch. Thought I'd write up my notes in case it helps someone else.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE TO SEE WHICH BRAKE SWITCH IS THE PROBLEM
1) Bike on center stand in neutral
2) Turn on Power. BMU light should come ON. Brake light should be OFF.
3) Stomp on rear brake and let go. Brake light should come ON then go OFF.
4) Depress front brake & hold. BMU should go OFF. Brake light should stay ON.
5) Let go front brake. Brake light should go OFF.
PROBLEM I HAD
At step 2) in above procedure the BMU was ON and brake light was ON.
At step 3) BMU went OFF. Conclusion front brake switch is open.
TEMPORARY FIX
Thoroughly cleaned switch (accumulated dust & grime). Tried WD40. Took needle nose pliers and manually depressed plastic switch a few times. This fixed the problem but it would keep coming back.
PERMANENT FIX (Replace front micro switch procedure)
Buy the correct BMW part shown
1) Took off left and right fiberglass panels
2) Removed two circlips holding the (Corbin) seat to release tank
3) Lift gas tank up and back & hold in place with bungee or tie wrap. The silver foil you see in the pic is my Johnny Blanket for heat control. Search this site if you're interested in it.
4) Locate connector plug on left side of bike. Picture shows my thumb on the OLD switch connector (after I undid it) and index finger on NEW switch connector
5) Repeat diagnostic procedure listed above as a sanity check that new switch fixes the problem (manually operate the switch)
6) Remove plastic cover at the front brake lever
7) Note how wiring is routed from the switch & then remove the two screws holding switch in place with a jewelers flat head.
#8 Install new switch and repeat diagnostic
9) Install tie wraps as needed & replace tank and body parts in reverse order of removal
10) All done! The LED lights seen are Hyperlights I added a while back. Very easy install with customized instructions for K1100 bikes. No wire splicing required.

Hi Johnny,
Yes those are Hyperlites. Expensive but my butt is worth more
If you're in town next weekend lets ride up Mt Hamilton following the route you had put together earlier. Tried to send you a PM but mail is stuck in "outbox". So here's the proposal...
Breakfast at 9am? Sat Aug 22nd.

P.M.'s will stay in your out box until the recipient logs on to receive it.
Just so you know.
It's also a good way to know when it is read. _________________ Ride safe.

Even if I promise to carry a roll of duct tape and some extra bungee cords to strap all your loose plastic bits back on. By the way, I did a Google search on "bungee cord head light mounts" and got no hits. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT
