hi all...I know this is an ancient bike but hopefully some guru with history on these beasts can help me with a shortcut diagnosis. I bought this bike last fall and I'm still learning it. It has 70,000Km on it and I think those are legit...matches with the maintenance records the seller had. I put on new tires, a battery, changed the fluids and I've put a couple of thousand km on in October, November and January (lucky me...its a warm bike!). Minor annoyance.....sometimes when I flick on the left signal, all four lights go on (like the four way flashers). It is inconsistent. Sometimes they'll all come on and then the two right ones will stop flashing, sometimes it will start signalling okay (just the left) and then the right ones will join in, and sometimes it just does what its supposed to do. Where should I start looking? Thanks.

Hello!
Fine machine you have! A frien of my has one with over 120 000 km on the clock, so you can expect good ride with low fuel consumption Very Happy.
About your problems, it looks to me like some kind of electric gremlin.
Take look at:

Hi __________,

Welcome to K11! I'm not an electrical specialist or anything - take a look at the the wiring - look for shorts or bad grounds. I think it's a good idea to clean and use some kind of protectant on all the connectors. I use Corrosion-X.

Good luck with it - let us know what you find.

Thanks guys. Rafal, those links were great. I went on my first spring ride yesterday (thinking that if I ignored the problem it would have disappeared over winter.....ha ha ha....no such luck). The right signal didn't work and the left blinked all four and cancelling was tough. I was all set to tear into the mysterious box and renovate the blinker box but thought I should get the cancelling button and right signal de-corroded. So I sprayed a whole bunch of WD-40 (wizzard piss) into the switches and worked them a whole bunch. Got the right signal working, the cancelling button works and so I tried the left signal.....it seems to work too. I wonder if there was some feedback to the other signals through the cancel button? I'll monitor things before I do any more....maybe that is all that was required. This bike really needs to go on a good long ride now (commuting just ain't far enough!). Cheers and thanks again!

Well, if the WD40 doesn't totally solve it, try duct tape or a hammer.

Ah....I spoke with confidence far too soon. The problem was not solved for long and I've just been ignoring it (actually the weather has been to warm for the Kbike so I've been commuting on my 650GSD) I finally got around to tackling this problem and can't seem to find the solution.

Is there a way to test the relay?

I went through the bike and cleaned all the contacts (positive and negative) for the left turn (which was always causing the 4ways to come on). I disconnected the switch for the 4way - no change, all four still blink when I signal left. I cleaned and reconnected the clip at the back of the bike, the central ground under the tank, ran a jumper wire from the ground on the signal (front and back) to the engine, soaked both the turn signal switch (left bar) and the turn signal cancel button(right bar) in WD40 and worked them fastidiously to ensure good contact inside. I even disconnected the relay and applied power to the harness wires leading to the left signal - when I do that they light independantly of the right signal. I honestly can't think of anything I missed. I popped the lid off the relay and with it connected could see the left side and right side switches popping off and on (right side works independantly, signal left and both work). I can only think that there is some circuit broken or shorted in the board but would really like to know if there is another test I can do to confirm that before mortgaging my house to by a new relay. Any ideas or should I just start sourcing a new relay? Thanks.

Sure sounds like a bad flasher relay.

I've got tested good used ones for sale.
