Took my '94 K1100RS out for a maiden voyage today (Yeah...finally) I will post a pic later in campfire.

Bike runs great, different than my K100RS. Is it my imagination, or is there more "leg room" on the k100?

I put a brand new Panasonic battery on the bike, and it was on the tender so I do not think voltage is an issue. The ABS lights are on, and I am not sure if I am resetting properly.

When I turn the bike on, I get alternating flashing lights. If I hit the reset button, the left one goes out, and the right one stays on. After I get going, I have heard that I am supposed to get a clunk....No clunk and lights stay on.

When I tried the reset, I can get both lights to stay on. Am I going about this the right way? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Joe

How are you resetting the ABS, Joe? Are you going by the sticky in the tech section or just pushing the button?

Grounding pin two and holding for 10+ sec.

Tried it with turning the key before I hit the switch and also turning the key while holding the switch.

I took me multiple times in every conceivable combination to reset once. Don't even remember what worked but when you turn on the key both lights should flash in unison, then tun off after you start to move.
What caused the failure. Just replacing the battery? Or did the lights flash like that when you bought the bike? Check ABS gaps on the wheels? Connections?

It was flashing since I bought it. I just put in the new battery. Today was the first time I have had it up past 5 mph...hoping they wold turn off. Connections are all good, and gaps have been set....

I will try the reset again (and again...)

Yep. Every conceivable combo. All you gots to do to see if it worked is turn the key and look for the lights in unison.

I tried the reset thing like 20 times....still not working.

If I hold down the abs button after I turn on the key, and hold for 30 sec. both lights come on steady, when I turn the bike back off, and disconnect the ground, they are back to blinking.

If I hold down the button, then turn on the key...it doesn't appear to do anything.

Any hints.

Joe - the button is not an ABS reset button - it just stops the lights from flashing so they don't make you crazy while you're riding. Ride far enough, they'll start flashing again - just to remind you the ABS isn't working.

Don't know why you're not hearing the CLUNKclunk.

Check the sensor gaps if you haven't already.

Get a 12V LED and read the fault codes. (Pos lead to middle terminal of diagnostic plug, neg lead grounded.) If you don't do that then you're just banging your head against the wall. You need to know which system component is causing the fault and go from there.

I checked codes, and got 8 flashes....check gap or external influence...I will check gaps tonight, should I be on the "close" side of specs? I thought I had set them up right in the middle.

On the front I just leave it as is and make sure that it's within the prescribed range. No sense messing with those ABS sensor shims if you don't have to.

On the rear I shoot for the middle of the range. Note that shims aren't really required for the rear as you can use a feeler gauge and adjust the gap by repositioning the caliper when you tighten the caliper bolts.

Let us know the gap checking results.

If the gaps are within spec then one thing to try might be disconnecting the ground and letting the bike set for a couple of days, hoping that the brain will reset itself.

I think I've read somewhere that the brain can stack fault codes (or was that for the Motronic?) so another thing to try might be reading the code, giving it a 20 sec reset and then checking the code again.

Thanks for the info...I did not check the gap after torquing the rear caliper...I bet I messed it up.

We are talking the "clearly audible internal test" referred to in the operators manual? My first abs car made the same noise. Minor hijack: I keep hearing mine do this during a ride at other times rolling off from a stop. At least I think it's the same noise. I've had no problems with my abs. Anyone else noticed this?

Sure have, many times on both bikes.

Mine only clunkclunks when I first start off - when the ABS does the "audible self test" - I won't hear it again until the bike has been shut down and restarted. I also heard it on the other BMW ABS bikes I've owned.

I've never heard the clunk, clunk. My ABS lights go off after just pushing it off the center stand and movnig a few feet.

The only clunk, clunk I've heard is when my final drive broke, but that was more of a whap, whap.

Checked the gaps tonight. The front is set at like .533mm and the rear is set to .610mm. I still have the 8 flash code. I will try to disconnect tonight and see if that helps. I cannot seem to reset the abs light. All attempts have really done nothing, the only thing that seems to change things is after I turn the key on, both lights are alternating, I hold the ABS switch for 30 secs, and the other abs light will come on steady (both lights on steady) when I turn off the key, they come back alternating.
