OK, dumb newbie question:
Read all the old stuff. I know the mirror pops off -- but which direction, towards the front or the back?.
Have been reefing on it but doesn't move, unlike some peoples that come off when bumped. I don't want to break the %$#^%^ thing. Maybe I don't need cables--but I want to do it anyway.
Thanks

There are 3 studs that fit over clips to hold the mirror in place. 2 studs are at the bottom of the mirror and 1 at the top. The studs are part of the bike's main fairing... the "male" portion of the assembly. There are recepticles with metal prongs in the mirror assembly. I've had plenty of experience removing and replacing my mirrors lately.
My last mirror removal experience consisted of watching my bike fall over in the curb... landing squarely on the mirror. Highly effective, but not recommended.
I have, however, removed a mirror by using a wide-bladed screwdriver wedged between the mirror and the fairing. Place the screwdriver in between the foam pad that is glued onto the base of the mirror and the main bike fairing. Pry GENTLY while putting a bit of pressure on the mirror. It doesn't take much if you get it going in the right direction. Go slow.
I'd start with the lower prong on the gas tank side of the mirror (as opposed to the headlight side). Push the mirror gently forward as you twist the wide-bladed screwdriver. Might even want to put a blanket on the floor in case the mirror suddenly pops off.

Mike - I would not use a screwdriver on the painted parts!
Hold the front of the mirror with one hand - with the other give a good push/thump from the rear on the outside edge - the mirror will pop right off. Make sure you have a good grip on it.
Unlike the RS, the LT mirrors have no place to attach tethers. Go figure...
A little white lithium grease on the clips will help prevent corrosion on the clips - and maybe make it a little easier to pop back on.
To reinstall, just line the mirror up and push it on from the outer edge - but don't push your bike over. _________________ Jim

I find that the most effective method is to bump it with my dirt bike. Pops right off! _________________ '04 WR450f

Thanks evreyone and for the epic Rod.
Yes FD--upon further review--I'll let sleeping dogs lie.
Was asking myself the wisdom of messing with it if it seems to on there that well. Maybe a tether isn't needed--until it takes a flop.

The proper way to remove the mirror is to hold it with one hand and with the heel of your other hand strike upward on the bottom outside corner. This replicates the bike falling over. These puppies are usually easier to remove than to replace. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

Unless the clips are worn (or you drop the bike) the LT mirrors aren't very prone to coming off. In all of my miles on RTs and LTs I've never had issues with the mirrors.
The RS mirrors, on the other hand, will come off if you look at them crosswise. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
