Dave (& Scott?) keep in mind that dusk will be happening up here around 6 pm by the beginning of October. BAD time to be on two wheels- we just had a full size moose in our backyard Sat evening.
If there is no traffic (at the NYC end- not here, of course) and you keep it to 1 or 2 short stops- figure on 5-1/2 hours.
I will have further info on directions and some suggested speeds (Mass. troopers!) as the w/e gets closer.

I'm in Canterbury, .3 miles from New Hampshire Motor Speedway just off Rt 106, not much out of the way from most directions. From here to Sugar Hill it's about 1.5 hours on the interstate 93 or a little over 2 on backroads. That stretch of slab however is one of the nicest you'll ever ride. _________________ Jim

Thanks mate, I'm planning to leave LI with Scott around 10 to leave plenty of time.
Would like to take the Port Jeff ferry....can you work that into the route? I think it would shave some time and add a ton of coolness factor. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

OK- here's da' poop.
Cathy and I were going to take the Port Jeff- Bridgeport ferry some time ago but plans got cancelled.
http://www.88844ferry.com/Default.aspx
The GOOD NEWS- You don't need reservations for a motorcycle. They fit you in around the cars and trucks. It allows you to avoid the Throggs Neck or Whitestone bottleneck. It is cool (maybe too cool in October)
The BAD NEWS- is that they will be running 2 ferries after today with 1-1/2 hours between each- so you would have to get the noon sailing. The trip takes 1:15 so you would get out of Bridgeport by say 1:30 pm.
That would get you to Jim's by 5:30 pm- too late to continue
Or direct from the ferry to here by maybe 6:30- too late period.
and either one doesn't allow any delays.
You would be better to skip the ferry, leave at 10 am, do the bridge PITA and have some leeway to get to Saltcreek then the 3 of you book it north with some daylight left to choose between I-93 or some great back roads.
Don't know if I can convince Phil to ride south with me to meet you @ Saltcreekland by 3 or so.
Lemme' know your thoughts. _________________ John & Cathy

Yeah the ferry was just an option I was tossing around, by no means is it needed.
I know the Throgs Neck hub well so we will use that. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Hi, John,
I have no set plans. I'm planning to leave eastern TN on Wed. 9/30 in order to reach Sugar Hill on 10/1. I'll probably go up I-81 into PA, then cut over through NY to Hartford, then head north on I-91. I don't know HOW I'll get from PA to Hartford, but I want to stay as far away from NYC as I can. I'll work out my exact route just before I leave TN. Once I arrive in Sugar Hill, as long as I have the stuff I need for the spaghetti, I'm fine to ride to meet the rest of the guys. _________________ Ride Safe,

Great OTG and Phil.
Phil- we can food shop in the a.m. then back road it down to the Saltcreek ranch after lunch.
Dave- looking forward to the HL. Hoping for good weather.....and a good escape from NYC. _________________ John & Cathy

Good question. I don't know what the wind/weather protection is like on your FZ. Given that you are no longer riding a 2 wheeled furnace and the days are cooling off here- my choice would be dress warmer. Middle of the day might get to the 70's, mornings are in the high 40's or so.
I figure you can always vent and open up a heavier jacket to cool down a bit- but if you have your lighter weight gear on and are freezing your arse off- NFG. _________________ John & Cathy

BTW,
Morning (around 7 am) and late afternoon (4-5:50 pm) I am frequently using the grip heaters.
Those coming (at this point it is OTG, Phil and Scott from a distance and Jim from NH) should plan on cool to cold-er riding. Just sort-of kidding about the snow.
Hoping for DRY conditions and looking at 2 weeks and 2 days 'till Phil motors this way. Keeping our collective fingers crossed about the weather.

Same here.
I hoping for no rain as well.
The last 3 trips I've taken have been in rain about 1/3 of the time. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi, John,
I'm getting psyched. I leave here on Saturday, starting the trek to Sugar Hill. As I wrote earlier, I plan to leave eastern TN on 9/30 in order to make it to Sugar Hill on 10/1. While in TN, I'll keep an eye on the Weather Channel. If I feel I have to leave early to miss some solid precipitation, I will. If I get caught in the white stuff, I'll find a motel and stay there, even if it means missing HL. I'll ride in the rain; I won't ride when snow is sticking to the road.
As far as cold weather gear, I have heated vest, chaps and gloves. I have ridden into the low 20's (dry) without problems. All 3 K75's I possess have the large (700 watt) alternator. _________________ Ride Safe,

Phil,
I really was kidding about snow. The earliest I can remember anything sticking to the ground is at Halloween.
Temps will be cooler but nothing should be frozen.
Stay in touch.
