On the 96 RS I recently purchased the fuel gauge doesn't work. However, the low fuel idiot light does come on at around 150 miles as expected. Based on this my assumption was that the fuel level sender works but the gauge is bad so I swapped in a known good fuel gauge. No joy.

Next I tried hooking up a fuel level sender from a parts bike. Gauge works fine!

I'm baffled. Don't both the idiot light and the monitor the same resistance from the fuel level sender? I don't understand why the idiot light works and the fuel gauge doesn't.

Never mind. I looked at the wiring diagram and the white wire goes to the idiot light and the yellow wire goes to the gauge. I guess my assumption that they monitor the same resistance was wrong.

Now to see what's up with the yellow wire... Evil or Very Mad

I has the same with my old RS, when i looked at the sender the warning light works off another contact so will work if the resistor is broken, only cure was a new sender.
