Hi Phil,Duck and anyone with elect.problems knowledge!!
I got my 95 k1100lt about 3 yrs ago and it had a bmw exide gell batt.in it.
I put on piaa1100x lights and run a streetpiolet 2730 w/xm sat.radio.
I try to keep it on a bmw charger cause a long time ago I had the dreaded abs lite blink alternatly and was reading on here about low batt. causing that to happen at times.
Now a couple yrs. later if I have to sit in traffic a while at idle, with the piaa lites on and the gps on,the gps screen goes out and come back on.
If I put the (choke) on some,(a bit faster idle) the gps screen will stay on.
Do I need to get a new batt. or replace the brushes in the alt.
I do have a sears test meter but I am not very good at using it(electrical problems are not my strong point) any help is always greatly appreciated.
thanks keith |

Take the battery out and have it tested for free at an auto parts store.

How old is the battery? Three years that you know of - maybe older - you don't say. _________________ Jim

My battery on my '95 was less than 1 year old this spring when I was getting low battery alarms with my fuel plus. The battery was put in new when J.O. bought the bike last July.
The bike only had 50K on it.
Put a new battery in it, thinking the battery was bad. Lasted 3 weeks and the problem was back.
The problem ended up being the slip rings in the alternator were dirty/tarnished.
I pulled the Alt, polished up the rings, touched the brushes, put it all back together and everything is fine. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks all; Jim I checked my maint. notebook the p.o.'s kept up with the bike and the batt. was put in on 10/01/04!!
SCOTT, what are the slip rings in the alt? does the repair manual show them?
DRAKE; I did take my batt. to autozone to check it and he said it was good but ask me wonder how many cold cranking amps it has,I had no clue but was 19 A /H
Now I need to study up on these slip rings in our alt.
Drake, on the plastic cover on the back,my alt.shows a 50 0 123 105 001 14v 27-50 A 2 306 020
I put my test meter on the terminals and it shows 13.05V (on the batt.)
IS it 27 amps at idle and 50amps the most out put it will have? |

Blue - I imagine it's probably time for a new battery. You might get some more use out of that one, but likely not too much more. _________________ Jim

Hi Fellow brick wranglers,
It sure is a wrangling job to get the alt. out ,on my 95 k1100lt anyway.
Wanted to clean them there slip rings and measure the brushes. they were 9 &10 mm long from the plastic holder to the end of the brush. That is a good thing anyway! Hope to get it back together this evening after (the salt mines) I think the abs pump could of been s tad smaller so the alt. can have room to get out with out gouging up the frame down tubes.
just my .2 cents worth
Will try to update on the alt. performance, when I get to ride it again.
thanks all, keith. |

I ended up removing the brake line that runs from the rear M.C. going to the ABS unit in order to get the alt out. No matter which way I twisted or turned the alt, it wouldn't come out with the brake line there. _________________ Ride safe.
