my panniers were a bit scratched and scored so I thought I'd have a go at spraying them (having 4 days off) - no pretense at a professional finish but at least better than they are. Sanded them down using fine w&d gave them about 5 coats of Canyon Red, left them overnight, used the w&d again to get them smooth and then spray lacquered them. Now an area on each (front top) has taken on a greyish, luminescent look. My guess is that I've used too much lacquer but does anyone know if this is a recognised fault and what I can do about it?

Too heavy with the lacquer or slight "bloom".

Was it cold / damp when you sprayed?

If it's a lacquer problem you might get away with very fine w'n'dry rub down and re-lacquer.

If it's bloom, then it's back to the base colour coat.

Almost certainly bloom! You need to spray in a dry warmish environment - kitchens are quite good when the other half goes out shopping! [ ONLY KIDDING ].

One trick you might use - flat the lacquer with 600 / 800 paper and then spray OVER that with your base colour and then re-lacquer.

Fortunately "bloom" will not bleed through. Good luck

I went the same route but I did mine flat black 3 years ago. I think colors are much more difficult to pull off on plastic. Plus the upkeep is really easy (pledge or Armor-all) and touch up is a cinch!

Krylon Fusion. Fusion is a paint specifically made to adhere to plastic. I used satin black It's impossible to find in stores BUT the Krylon brand is owned by Sherwin-Williams so you can go by a S-W paint store and they can order it for your.

A few more pointers:

When removing the rubber scuff pads use a narrow chisel or similar. Be very careful and take your time. The rubber scuff pads tear very easily.

The easiest way I've found to reattach the rubber scuff pads after painting is to buy a caulking gun tube of roofing sealent. Let it cure for a day or two and you've a good soild waterproof adhesive. Use it to reattach the roundels and reflectors too.

Drill the rivets out and remove the locks. Take your time on this too. If you heat up the rivets too much from friction while drilling them the plastic will start to melt and the holes will enlarge. After painting they can be easily reattached with a pop rivet gun that costs <$20 at the hardware store.

Be careful prying the square refletor out - they crack easily. (But are realtively cheap to replace from the dealer.)

Another good " home economics" tip which adds up points for the upcoming divorce. Wink Wink

When you need to spray something with Hi-Temp paint [ Sperex VHT / similar ] - wait until your other half goes out for a few hours then - heat the oven up to maximum - put part in on Gas Mk 4 for 30 minutes - remove when nicely warmed through. Cool

Spray with your VHT paint and place back in oven for a further 60 minutes or so.

Remove and set aside to cool. Perfect job. Laughing Laughing

Regretably it will then take approximately forever to get the chemical smell out of the oven. Worked for me [ divorce # 2 ]

That's good info there, Beachcomber. But I would not use VHT paint on my side cases, nor would I put them in a 500 degree oven.

I agree with the other posters about painting when the weather is right, though.

Hi Jim,

the part in question was an Allard / Shorrock supercharger casing. Wink

I'm still not quite up to speed with American humour, would your response be termed droll or tongue in cheek? Cool

Scott,

there's nothing so weird as English humour!!!!! Wink

I guess that's why most of our comedy shows bombed in the USA.

Now, when we get to making light hearted humour with our German cousins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi TJ - guess it was just a bit of thread drift - since it started with sidecases (panniers) - then next I knew, you were using VHT paint and baking things in the oven... Maybe I missed the post about the supercharger casing.

Uh, what's the difference between droll and tongue in cheek?

Whoa back boys............................ Laughing Laughing

Hi Mystic Red - sorry, I had put my origin on other posts on this forum - I'm based in Redditch, a small town just outside Birmingham in the UK.

Jim - droll is being very dry wit your wit - tongue in cheek, means you're poking a bit of light hearted fun. Emphasis on LIGHT HEARTED FUN.! Wink

Steve - better than putting the wood inside the panniers! Rolling Eyes

OTG - you're just a bad boy
