|
This is my first post since buying a 97 K1100LT. I have had the bike only a couple weeks and have rode it only about 150 miles. Still just to cold and to much salt on the roads and the snowsharks are still very hungry. I sold my beloved 78 R100RS after having my way with her for 29 years. I think it has the best looking fairng BMW ever made but I just got tried and bored with her. I kept her in great shape and got a fair price for her.
The LT question. I hate digital clocks and I am going to put a Autometer clock where the left speaker would go, no radio on this bike. It is the standard 2 1/16" dia. and it supposed to be a little better then VDO's clock. Can I take the wires off the digital clock and extend them over to the new clock or should I look for a different power source? How difficult is it to remove the wires from the digital clock? I am making a aluminum disc that will fit in the speaker grill's spot with a 2 1/8" dia. hole for the clock. The LT has 52,000 miles and was very well taken care of and runs great. Kind weird holding on to rubber mounted handlebars though. Any help would be appreciated. _________________ Reisdent woodworker

I'm not sure about your clock mod, or why someone would go to so much trouble to add another clock to a bike, but hey different strokes for different folks.
There is a 3$ handlebar stiffening mod that takes all of 15 mins to do and one trip to Home Depot. Instant upgrade, negligible buzziness. It's in the tech stickies section.
Welcome to the site! How about some pics of the new scoot! Does it have a BFD? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

WELCOME!
Others may help with your clock, but check the Tech page for the handlebar fix.

You should also be aware that there is very limited depth behind the speaker holes, so take some measurements before fitting. _________________

You'll probably want to use a different power source because otherwise you'll have to mod the instrument cluster somehow. And the digital clock inside the cluster does not have wires going to it anyhow - it mounts to pins on a circuit board.
If you lift the tank up and open the relay box you will find an unused round white wiring harness connector - it's for the BMW alarm system which very few bikes have. I don't remember which color wire it is but one of the wires to that connector is always hot and would be a good power source for your new clock.
As OTG noted, adding washers at the base of the handlebar mounts will firm up the steering. Easy to do.... _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Also up behind the inst cluster on the left side should be a white flat 3 pin connnector for primary/aux power for the Radio that you could tap for power source since you say it doesn't have a radio installed. It should be taped/tied to the metal support arm for the fairing. _________________ Ride safe.

Boy, you guy are fast with responces, thanks. I did check the distance behind the speaker grills and there is enough room for the clock. What is the purpose of the 3/16" steel covers on the back of the grills? I like the idea of taking the tank off and using the alarm wires. I will also check and see if there is constant power to the radio wire that someone suggested. The bike has a brand new Odyesse battery and the Metzlers have more then 65% tread left, also has Works shock and fork springs. The PO bought a new topcase from someone but it has a blue top and not red so I may paint it or Rhino line it since there are no used ones around in black. Everything on this bike from the tranny on back is black. FP, swingarm, oil pan. Is it common not to be able to see oil in the plastic window below the crank? Why is there no volt meter on the K's? May put one in the right speaker grill. If I can figure out how to load a picture I will. The weather is above 50 today so a ride is in order. _________________ Reisdent woodworker

The oil sight glass should be checked when the bike is on the center stand on level ground. If it's on the side stand then the oil is on the other side of the sump. Also, let it sit on the center stand for a few minutes to allow the oil to drain into the sump from the engine.
No voltmeter on our Ks.
I used Line-X, not Rhino on my bike:

I and others have noticed that sometimes when checking the sight glass, find that the oil "hides". For no explainable reason, when I check the oil the glass is empty, check again later, it's normal. I am now running with an overfull sump, for that reason. Best checked on a cold level engine. _________________ Regards Tim,

Yeah, my bikes "hide" oil sometimes too. Regardless of what's going on I never fill above 2/3s. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
