This is a stick up!!
Don't leave your camera just laying around...
"CAR, car, car!!!"
"What car?"
Where ara the damn grips on this thing???
110mph shot...complete with dopper effect as he went by us...."HoooolleeeeeSssshiiiiTT"
From under the men wrestling the poor little k-bike unwillingly being forced into the trailer, where no BMW should ever be, was heard her soft protests, "no, please don't make me go in there", and she locked her rear wheel down tight to the ramp.
Oh, and one just for Owstritch
More later... _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Why didn't you guys pop the final drive off and free up the wheel? Seems like it would be easier to move the bike around that way.
When I'm on the road I carry a 12mm Allen wrench for the inside pivot. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

It would sort of roll, then lock, then roll. It was part way the up the ramp when it locked again. The ramp was wet and we had many hands, it was easier to just slide 'er in there. (and they had been waiting two and half hours for us to come back with truck!)
It rolled fine in reverse getting it off the truck at home, with a lovely clunk, clunk, clunk as the drive shaft flopped around in the housing. I'll start a seperate thread about that when I pull it apart and see what the damage is.
Thanks for the pics Shogs, I'm trying to post mine but have exceeded my picture space on my free website, looking at other (cheap) options. _________________ Steve

Ok guys, here's my trip report.
First off, I have to put a plug in for the Smugmug photo hosting site. My "free" website with Verizon had reached it max allowable number of pics and I was stuck on what to do. I knew of Smugmug from Gwen and ADVrider, but when I learned it was owned by Baldy who also owns ADVrider and it helps fund that site, it was a no brainer. It's way easier to upload photos to and only costs about $3.50 a month. Awesome.
Trip Report:
I had a blast, even with the major breakdown of my bike, it was a lot of fun. You find out real quick who your friends are when you breakdown in the middle of BFE. I can't think of a better group of people to breakdown with!
I got a call Thursday evening from none other THE Scott underline Anderson who was in North Carolina on his way up from Florida. He wanted to know if he could come up my way and ride to HM with me on Friday. I invited him to come up and spend the night, then we'd head off Friday morning.
This is the first time I've had two K's in my garage. Plenty of room for both (hint, hint, honey!)
Scott checking out the route for the next day
We had great weather for the ride up and no major problems, only my mistake in navigating and about a half hour on the wrong freeway (gee, I don't remember 460 being a 70mph major freeway?, it wasn't, we were on I-85, don't ask me how). We arrived at HM about 5:30. Total time was 8 1/2 hours, would have been more like 7+ if not for my error).
Then Jim and Rich arrived shortly after us.
The gang was all there. After a few cold ones and a bit of catching up and discussing the ride in.
Audi (abreeze) started up what I think was the best meal of the trip.
The next morning, after some big thunderstorms and the power being out all night (sorry about the cold shower Audi, you snooze, you lose) we went out for a great breakfast.
Suck on those blueberries Johhny O!. Good 'ole Virgina country cooking where grits are standard (as they should be!)
Then we were off into the hills after fueling up our stomachs and bikes. Not too long into the mountains we came up on this.
Apparently a tractor trailer tried to take a corner he couldn't make and high sided up on a guardrail. The road was closed and we had to detour.
Not long after that the "Driveshaft Failure" incident occured....
First a little pre-break history. Don't ever post this before a big trip:

That morning as we headed out down a steep road from the cabins, I heard a sound coming from what I thought was the clutch that I can only describe as "gravel in a blender". It didn't sound good. But I thought maybe it was just cold and I wasn't wearing my earplugs and was maybe hearing more than I normally did. Then while riding in the twisties, there was a lot of harsh back lashing everytime I let off or got on the throttle. It was really messing up my entry lines and I was cornering llike a totally noob. I thought I was just rusty from not having corners like that where I live. I knew later it was the beginning of the end of my driveshaft.
As I was coming out of a turn and started accelerating, I heard a Wap, Wap, Wap, Wap, Wap that was not a good sound or feeling. Fortunately I was only going about 35-40 and had just come up on a rare straight part, I started to pull over on the right and then saw a gravel driveway up on the left about 50 ft up, so I coasted over to it and pulled in. Most of the rest of the gang was right behind me and pulled up along side. I knew right then she was done and wasn't going anywhere under her own power.
Everyone gathered around, options were discussed, maps consulted. I figured the best thing was to get a rental truck that I could drive all the way back to Va. Beach. There aren't many BMW dealers in that part of the country. So Scott rode me back down to town with Jim leading the way while the rest of gang stayed with the bike and sat around for two+ hours.
This is a pillion shot of Scotts helmet and Jim leading.
No luck in town finding a truck, but the local U-haul/car repair guy was very helpful and opened back up to make some calls, he found us a U-haul dealer a few towns away who was willing to stay open after his normal closing time for us to get the truck.
Back at the crime scene, the gang was doing some speed runs, mostly Audi, and kicking back on the porch of the apparently vacant house where I pulled in at. We then loaded the patient up and headed back to the cabin.
That night we went out for Italian at the Tuscan and had many laughs, it was raining hard, so the gang loaded up in the back of the U-haul like a bunch of illegals and I was the DD for the evening. I think my bike was molested in inappropiate ways.
I heard her beeping out in sad ways while I was driving, what did you guys do back there ....?
The next morning we were up early and put the cabin back in order and I had a fun drive home in a big van.
Overall it was still a fun trip and getting to see everyone was great. Shogs has way more better pics than I do, hopefully she'll post some more.
Things I'm thankful for;
That the rear end didn't go out:
on my way home by myself at 70+mph..
in the middle of a sickly twisty mountain road with no shoulders.
That the rear wheel did not lock up.
But mostly that I was with a great group of friends who set aside the rest of their day to help me out! I can't begin to express my gratitude to all of you.
Can't wait 'till next year! _________________ Steve

Hi, J.O.,
OK, we've thrown down the gauntlet. We had a great time at HMII, including Cuban cigars, lies, er, stories, immoral support for those with mechanical troubles, food, and a fine ride, though cut short by an unforseen problem. Can we have a better time at Hungry Dungee I? Time will tell, and I plan to be there to sample your and Drake's cooking. At the moment, Audi is the champion steak-cooker. I plan to taste the West Coast cooking and will give my HONEST, UNBIASED (yeah, right!) opinion. I'm looking forward to it!

Seeing all these pictures and write-ups makes me sick that I missed it. As a way of explaining, in the world of politics when a call comes at 11pm at night it usually means I will be leaving on a plane at 5am. And so it went, the last week of March Jimmy Tedisco was running neck to neck against Scott Murphy for a US House seat in a special election in the 20th District in New York (aka around Albany.) The afternoon of the day after the election his entire campaign staff save for the fundraiser, quit to go work for the fellow who would be replacing him as the Minority Leader in the State Assembly. And the call came.
I left for New York at 5am the next morning and spent the next month pulling 20-hour days trying to pull a win out of a literal election-day exact tie: 75,225 to 75,225 - it would all come down to absentee and overseas ballots.
After 4-weeks we were behind 400 votes and it was looking like it would be months and months (and hundreds of thousands of dollars) before the question of "can a State resident register to vote anywhere in the State?" could be answered. For a lot of reasons, we ceded the race.
I was home for a day and left to join my Wife on a business trip to the Kentucky Derby (as a fundraiser she occasionally has pretty sweet business trips.) I returned as exhausted as I have ever been in my life, and spent the remainder of the week catching up on bills and other things I had missed. It wasn't until Jim called me Thursday night that it dawned on me HM was that weekend. I wanted to come down in the worst way, but I hadn't spent any time with my Wife in a month and was still pretty wiped out.
I am looking forward to next year
(Phil - I hope the cigars were as good as I imagined they would be, I am DAMN sorry I missed the chance to shake your hand and say Hello!) _________________

Ted, you were there with us in spirit, we had a few beverages in your name. The cigars smelled good!
We certainly understand the reasons, but you better get two wheels and be there next year!
