I've been playing with LEDs lately and by experimenting with lots of different bulbs have finally come up with the right bulbs to do the whole cluster in LEDs, not just the backlights.
Anyhow, when I turned the bike on to test it, the bulb monitor light didn't come on, and the brake lights didn't work. Seems I accidentally hit the kill switch while squeezing between my car and the bike in the garage. No big deal.
However, this got me to thinking. If I'm riding along and something happens (overheat light comes on, engine sarts making funny noises, whatever) and I need to hit the kill switch then as I'm coming to a stop nobody behind me (like that big semi coming downhill at me ) has any idea that I'm using my brakes. How dumb is that?
Just remember this if you ever need to hit the kill switch while riding. NO BRAKE LIGHT. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi Drake,
Thanks for the warning.
Have you come across replacement LED bulbs for turn indicators?
Have you given any thought to modifying the amber turn lights on a LT so that they are always on while riding (to improve visibility) and yet flash when the turn switch is activated to indicate turning.

Yes, after trying lots of different bulbs for the turn signal indicator bulbs I found some that are excellent. I've already sold a few kits on eBay and will be selling more in December after my dad's heart surgery which forces me to be out of town until mid-December. I may try to make some hwile I'm hanging out in California though since I'll have lots of spare time.
I have front Run-n-Lites on my LT. I also have side marker LEDs that are running lights that alternate with the turn signal so I don't see the need to change that.
On the RS, I think running lights in the front look dorky due to the lens. But I am going to make my recently LED'd front reflectors alternate with the turn signal.
Note that any time you start messing with the turn signals chances are you might have to add load resistor to keep the flasher relay from hyperflashing if it thinks a bulb is out. And load resistors generate heat so some care must be taken in mounting them. (Or I suppose you could just hide the old turn signal bulb in the fairing which would fool the flasher relay.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Best wishes to your Dad on his surgery. Make sure you let me know if you have time at all on the trip up or down and I'll see if I can join ya for a ride.
BTW, the kickstand down will also prevent the brake light from working. This gets the mechanics every time. They keep telling me the bulb's burned out... Then I demonstrate. _________________ M N B

The sidestand wiring harness connector on my RS is shorted. I changed the low fuel light so that instead of being a low fuel light that indicator lamp now illuminates if the sidestand is down. I never really liked the low fuel light anyhow - it bugs me at night and IMO isn't really necessary with a trip odometer and a fuel gauge.
On the LT, I can't see the high beam indicator due to my GPS mount. On that bike I took the unused old choke indicator lamp(only ABS I bikes have this) and put a blue LED behind it for my high beam indicator.
Thanks re my dad. I probably won't have time to stop on the way down. I'm probably going to hit SF Monday afternoon sometime and then camp at Big Sur that evening. If you wanted to join up with me for a bit riding south of Carmel I could do that but I have no idea what time I'll hit the Bay Area - it would definitely be afternoon which is what I 'm shooting for but could be later.
What's the fastest way to get from the Golden Gate to Carmel? 280? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi Drake,
My prayers are with you for your fathers surgery.
Sign me up for LED kits replacements for the indicator signals.
From Golden Gate for the SCENIC ROUTE I'd take Hwy 35 to Hwy 1. Keep riding at the edge of the ocean the whole way to Carmel.
For the FASTEST route I'd take 280 to San Jose and then 101S to 156W if overlapping with commute traffic. If you can avoid commute traffic simply take 101S all the way from SF past San Jose to 156W.
Drop me a pm when you're coming through. Perhaps we can connect if its on a weekend. I'm in South San Jose (roughly where 101 meets 280)

I'll probably hit it around rush hour I'm guessing so I'll do 280(a.k.a. Do 80 _ and then 156. 101 doesn't sound bad either.
Look for a red/black passing through on Monday. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

When I was working on my front brake lever to get it to return properly and shut the brake light off I had a moment where I thought I screwed it up completely. Holy shit, now I have NO brake light at all! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I would wish papa Duck good luck, but given the stock his son is made of I have a feeling he will do just fine.
(just tell him 2 things....do NOT freak out when he wakes up from general anesthesia and TAKE THE GDAMN PAIN MEDICINE)
Those old coots love to try and tough it out, which is the WRONG track to take post-op CABG. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Thanks, gang. He'll be fine. He's in general good health for an 80 year old coot and they're sneaking in under the ribs for the bypass so it's not the lay your guts on your chest routine. They say one or two nights in the hospital and a week of dowtime at home. Down here (I got here tonight) in "God's Waiting Room" they know their heart stuff pretty darned well so I'm not too worried.
He's understandably a bit nervous about it. I'm just here to hold his hand. (I owe him a few. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)
