Hi Guys,
New to this forum and also to K11's.
I've only been into Beemers [ Airheads and the Kays ] for the past 5 years - and only really started "playing"with them in the past 3.
Started off with Cafe Racered R80 and R100 and then moved on to Kays.
First off 2 "Streetfightered" projects before moving on to a Race Rep conversion on my K100RS.
That's more or less where I'm at now - the Race Rep conversion is pretty well completed - Duke 916 fairing, Yamaha R1 seat, Tarrozi clip ons, Rear set rests, underseat exhaust and K1100RS rear wheel. I've also developed a replacement alloy bodied shock with some old automotive buddies.
It then became obvious that I needed to swap a few more bits from the 1100RS into the mix, 4 pot calipers and so on.
Although I'm now retired and EVERYTHING has to be done on a shoestring - I decided that it would be more cost effective to buy a cheap 1100RS. So when one came up on e-bay last week with "overheating problems", I couldn't resist. And boy, was it cheap !!!
That's now added another project to my fleet - Airhead Flat Track project [ nearly there ], K100 Streetfighter [ Mk 3 ] and now the two Race Reps.
In case I get bored, I have a K100 that I'm "Triking" [ Radical Exile Cycles style ], and my long term project - a Max Deubel Sitter Racing Sidecar Homage for Track Days and Road Use.
I may have come to Beemers late in my motorcycling life - but I am making up for lost time.

Pictures please< I'd like to see the streetfighters.
Also, if you're looking for information on "high performance sidecars" check out http://hpsidecars.com/index.htm. If you click on the projects page there's some information on my K1100RS sidecar rig.
Welcome

Hi Guys,
thanx for the warm welcome to the forum.
The "Race Rep" conversion is in the final stages of prototyping - I hope to have it ready to tear down for painting, powder coating etc. by January.
I've got some "work in progress" pix.
Ditto with the Airhead Cafe Racer, the Airhead Flat Tracker is probably about 2 months away from completion.
I'll post up some pix as soon as I work it all out!
I hope to have the Race Rep on the road by Feb. next year - ditto the Flat Tracker, as that will be my temporary "daily ride" when the second Kay comes off the road for conversion.
The only remaining pix I have of the Streetfighter are in the mock up stage - my computer crashed last year and stole ALL my archived pix - bummer.
Thanx again for the welcome - I'm going to enjoy K11 ownership,

Hi Guys,
I have just been trawling through recent mails to acquaint myself with 11's.
I bought my 1100RS VERY cheaply as it was "overheating".
The previous owner is no dummy and had changed the water pump seals, thermostat and flushed the rad.
I accepted that I was in for maybe a head gasket change at the least and possibly even more if the head or block was cracked.
Apart from the obvious water signs of overheating - it belches out clouds of smoke. Then I saw the pix of Shoganai's bike starting up, and my bike is no worse than that!
However, it's early days and I've only just collected the bike no time yet for investigation.
On speaking to the previous owner subsequently, he did say that the fan didn't come in until AFTER it had overheated.
As there seems to be all sorts of dramas with 11's and marginal cooling / bad fan operation, I am now hoping THAT is the reason.
The engine starts first time an apart from the smoke [ which clears after 5 mins ] it runs really sweet and no unusual noises. In fact it is no different to my K100's if I leave them on the side stand overnight.
This weekend I intend to check all the water levels, rad cap seals and re-torque the head bolts - and then I'll rig up a switch to manually engage the fan and see if that makes any difference.
It's not too important as the bike has been bought for conversion to a Race Rep over the winter - so plenty of time.
BTW - in answer to someone else's query ALL engine blocks interchange in the various chassis. The only difference is the engine mounts - some rubber some solid - and even then it's only a matter of shimming.
If push comes to shove - ie MAJOR disaster with the 11 engine, I intend to drop a K100RS [ 1987 ] in as a temporary measure.

Check out Shog's thread on the treatment stuff too, it seems to have made a hell of a difference on compression. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

they all smoke when you leave them on the sidestand. I think Gwen's was smoking other than that. _________________ Jim

This is my first dealings with an 11 - all my previous bikes have been Kay 100's.
I'm used to the James Bond syndrome if the bike has been left on the side stand, but I thought BMW cured this on later models with new oil control rings?
I'll be investigating properly tomorrow [ Sunday ] running through some logical tests, rather than hearsay from the previous owner.
Fingers crossed

They did modify the rings in 87 or 88 so they wouldn't let as much oil by when on the sidestand. A K1100, if left on the sidestand long enough (weeks) will still generate some smoke - but nowhere near as much as the first Ks. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well, checked everything out - no loss of water, new seals in cap.
Started it up after 1 week of lying idle on the CENTRE STAND.
Fired up first turn NO SMOKE at all, sounds sweet as a nut, no noises.
I let it run until the temp gauge was reading normal, then hot, then very hot - but NO FAN cutting in. I turned the motor off and allowed the motor to cool down and jury rigged the fan so it was on all the time. Fired her up again and this time after 15 minutes running stationery - perfect temp.
Thanx to all who contributed - I now own a VERY cheap 11, which only requires a new fan switch.

Hi Shog,
thanx for the welcome, I must say I feel "at home" here on this forum. I love it's global nature. There's a German Brick site with an English section which gives the same feel.
Of course the total knowledge pool is also invaluable, and folk seem quite happy to share.
I'm seriously chuffed [ pleased ! ] with my new toy - I think I might have worn rings / bore maybe as there is still a little smoke - hardly noticeable. At 121K miles I guess that could be expected.
I'm just bidding on a BRAND new block /piston / conrod set on e-bay .99p at the moment and NO other bids. No reserve either - fingers crossed!
After I got the bike running OK I continued to strip it down in preparation for the Race Rep conversion. I can't get over how much weight is saved when you ditch the stock items - seat, fairing, luggage, etc.
I also fitted one of the new Cafe Moto alloy bodied shox before I stripped it and took it for a blast around the lanes - superb and worth every penny [ £200 with new spring ].
I want to get my Race Rep conversion out BEFORE BMW launch [ officially ] their World Superbike effort. My bike will also be Satin Black with Gold wheels / accents.
Aha - the worksop is calling.........................
