Hello gentlemen,

As you can see from my previous post(s), I am new to K1100's.

Had a few K100s and a K1200 but not a K1100 until last month.

So my question is about the ABS lights flashing until you set off.

I know that the lights flash continously if the battery is low or has problems, but I have just replaced the battery and the ABS lights now flash until I move off. This didnt happen with the old battery.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this normal?

Does it mean although its a new battery, something is wrong with the electrical circuit? Or does the ABS need re-setting? Or ....

Any advice would be very welcome.

Depends what year bike/ABS type you have as the ABS lights work differently.

On mine (see below) when the ignition is switched on, both lights flash, and will stay flashing until I've tapped both brake levers after I've set off.

Alternatively, if I tap both levers before setting off, the warning triangle goes solid and the ABS light still flashes, but they both go off when the bike moves.

If they stay flashing after all of that, the ABS may need resetting.

yes - it's normal. The ABS has to do a self test - you should also hear a little clunk clunk sound just about the time the lights go out.

If you're out running errands, stopping and starting the bike a lot, you'll draw the battery down to the point that there isn't enough voltage for the ABS to work - although the bike will start just fine. The lights will flash continuously until the battery is charged up enough for the ABS to work - AND - you turn the bike off and restart.

It helps if you add the year and model of your bike to your (as yet non-existent) signature so we know what you're dealing with - some issues are model specific.

When you start the bike, the ABS brain does a system test during initialization. It tests the front and rear modulators, front and rear sensors and the brain itself. It cannot test the sensors until you are moving and the sensors are generating pulses. This is why it keeps flashing until you start moving.

ABS I and II behave differently - ABS I = two bean cans, one either side of rear fender, ABS II = discretely hidden unit below seat.
This description is for ABS II, but the main difference is that ABS I bikes use the RHS ABS lamp plus the triangular brake warning lamp.

Year is 1998 & last 7 digits of the VIN are 0237669.

Chopper's description above is how your lamps should act. It appears your ABS is working properly. If you ever get low voltage caused alternately flashing lamps when starting, there is a very easy solution. If you have headlamp relays installed (which I recommend to everyone) you can use the load shed relay to supply the 12V to the ABS test circuit. This prevents the ABS from doing it's voltage test until AFTER the engine starting load is gone.

I did this modification to my son's '94 K11RS a couple of years ago and he has never seen another low voltage fault.

The easiest for me is to let the bike warm-up a little bit and then turn it off and restart it. Usually happens on a cold morning when I havn't had the batt tender on.
