I've seized pistons on one of the front brake calipers and was wondering whether to replace with a s/h caliper or preferably redo the seals. BUT, I have no idea of how difficult a job this is, has anyone out there replaced the seals on their K1100?

I've replaced the pistons and seals on mine. It was a straightforward job. The caliper halves have to be separated; the hardest part was removing the seized pistons -- I punctured them with a hammer and screwdriver and pulled them out. Be sure to replace the small O-ring between the caliper halves and it helps to have a dental pick to pluck out the old seals.

Clymers covers the rebuild and those particular instructions are fairly coherent.

Are you sure it is seized pistons? i had a stuck left front brake. (it kept on braking)
I found out that the lower rubber hose section was rotten on the inside. Result: little peices of rubber made their way down and plugged the holes and feed thrus in the caliper.
a good clean of the caliper and new hoses (EXPENSIVE!) solved it.
You could check the hose as follows: when you press 1 piston down, the other will come out (as the fluid won't travel up the hoses), (pistons on 1 side of the caliper)

Good two cents. Also don't destroy the piston until you have tried blowing it out. Put the caliper half face down with a rag over it and blow in the hole for the hose. It can get kind of messy so make sure you are away from the bike or anything painted. If it doesn't come out, try tapping it back in to the caliper half with a rubber mallet and then try air again. The piston maybe seized to the caliper wall.

Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a go. Definately the pistons seizing, I checked them out a few weeks ago.
