Back in November Jo put a link in the classified section for an Ohlins shock for sale over on the MOA. I was/am considering it, however the model #BM420 is for 94+ RS's according to the Ohlins website. Anyone know why it wouldn't work on my '93? The ABS I canisters is the only thing I can think of, but I don't see how they would interfere.

IF it looks like the one below and has one of the reservoirs integrated into the shock then, no, it won't fit. The ABS can gets in the way. I initially bought that one for my my 93 LT hoping their was some way to make it fit. It won't. I kept it in my basement just in case I bought a 94+ some day. Laughing

The one I have on my 93 LT that has both reservoirs remote. It came from a K100RS4V.

I have an Olins on my 1993 K1100RS; I'll look to see if I can get a model number off of it and post it here.

According to the web, it should be a BM309....I bet you want to get rid of that old thing don't you? Think of the Christmas presents you could buy with the $200 you want to sell it to me for. Smile

Seriously though,
Thanks for the responses. Drake, you saved me from buying yet another something for my bike that I couldn't use and then have to try to get rid of.

Just stumbled on this topic.

I've just spent the past 4 months liaising with a speciality CAR shock manufacturer to develop an alloy bodied [ CNC machined ] for my Kays [ 100's mostly ].

Until I retired [ ha,ha] my "day job" was manufacturing and developing replica sports cars [ Cobra, C and D Type Jags, Porsche T6 and 550 ]. Now I'm "retired", I still continue as an Auto Engineering design consultant.

Naturally we had special requirements for shox. We even had our own "One Make" race series for Cobra Reps [ RAM /Bardahl Trophy ],which naturally required special shox.

The purpose of this unseemingly unrelated pre-amble is to establish my / the manufacturer's credentials.

I was horrified at the cost of speciality Bike shox - especially steel bodied versions. So - I did the obvious and asked the manufacturer if he would be interested in developing a reasonably costed, high quality alloy bodied shock based on our Cobra Trophy units.

This we've now achieved and he [ Realm Engineering Ltd. ] has brought out the first of the RAM shox, developed especially for the Kay range.
Now I've got a K11, naturally, I want to develop a shock for that!

Lots of features, fully [ and easilly ] adjustable for valving and spring platform. The UK price is £195 + taxes [ currently 15% ], don't know how that compares in the USA. but here in the UK it's nearest rival [ steel bodied ] is almost 30% dearer. Alloy bodied shox are at least 50% dearer.

About 10 years ago he played around with remote reservoir shox [ for cars ] - and naturally I've asked the question - bikes?

I'm just about to receive my new K11 shock, which has Alinabal Rod end mounts [ so called Competition version ].

If ever I find out how to post pix, I'll send a couple of the shock on my K100RS

You must post pictures!

OTG,
thanx for the kind words - I AM the original computer dummy, but if you're willing to act as the middle man, I can send the pix to you - MY address is vonheyda@hotmail.co.uk.

Back to the shox - supplied originally for our Race and Replica cars [www.realmengineering.com.] - I HATE paying what I consider to be "unreasonable" prices, based on what the item is for and NOT it's value.

Excellent quality STEEL bodied automotive shox in the UK [ adjustable, variable spring platforms, etc., etc. ] are approximately HALF the price of a similar bike shock. WTF for?

Same with GRP, fabrication, exhaust, etc. A COMPLETE Stainless Steel exhaust system for our C Type rep [ inc. silencer ] is less tham HALF the price as a system for ANY Rice Rocket - don't even get into Beemer exhausts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whooooa - getting on my soap-box again. Calm down son.............

Back to the plot - Shox have been Lab tested and now done over 6000 road miles of testing [ 2 x bikes ]. They've just been given the green light for public sale by the manufacturer.

The great thing with these guys is that they are happy to discuss ANY requirements, new developments etc. - quite a refreshing change.

be "unreasonable" prices,

Well that's the rub, isn't it.

I have no doubt that an Ohlins represents the pinnacle of rear suspension tech for our motobricks, however the price really puts them out of reach for most.

$1,000+ is just unreasonable for a new shock on a 15 year old bike.

Yes I know you can go used, but then pop up as infrequently as a Yeti sighting, and even they are 4-600.

I am very very happy with the Works. It's easily 10x better than stock.

+1 on the $ of an Ohlins. Dang? U get a massage, dinner and anything else with that big " G " ?
Anyway's, I emailed that guy in the UK , " Manfred von Heyda [vonheyda@hotmail.co.uk] "
He got back to me within an hour! They are working on a special. No, it is not as adjustable as the Ohlins, like 13 pre-load settings, ect. no remote resevoir, says they do not need it. Looks simple, straight forward & easy to use. About 280 sterling, not sure how much US that is.
He said shipping is EXPENSIVE, group buy might be better? They are enginerring one for the RS & the LT.
He's off & riding for the weekend, lucky bugger. We have a blizzard in South East, WI right now, no riding. He's riding with the people who manufacture these to his specifications.
Will get back to all when I hear more. My RS has 32K on it and needs a rear shock.

Hey Jim

Manfred here [ AKA TJ ].

Ohlins - excellent product but why so fargin expensive??????????????????

We RACE Cobra and C Type replicas and we don't pay that much for our Race shox. Ahaaaaaa - but then it's for a car, same thing for a bike 5 x times the cost. I HATE paying a PERCIEVED value as opposed to a real value.
I REPEAT - Ohlins ARE superb, but how muckin fuch?

OK - I've approached our tame shock guy - like me, now retired living in relative comfort with his Aston Martin for company.

He lives in the real World of values - not some -"wow it's a biker, let's get rich quick" World. He will, if I request, look into making remote reservoir shox, but as he said, unless you are Racing or something equally as extreme, you will NEVER reach the limit of performance of the "normal" alloy shox product.

Now I am the first to admit, those remote res Ohlins to look the biz, but do I NEED that amount of sophistication? Probably not, but then I probably don't need the Rod End mounts on my K11 either, but they also look trick.

Glad to see there's dsome interest on ypoyr side of the pond - we're getting good response from the Fatherland as well.

Hey Jim feel free to post those crappy pix - I'll send some better ones over,

TJ [ Manfred ]

Hey Manfred!!!

This is too funny! I am OK with OUT the remote thingy, I am ALL ABOUT function. I most never go for looks over that.
Very few exceptions, our 93 K1100RS's being a good example. Those shocks your working on look good I think as is. Clean & light, functional above all else.

I am no " poser "

We can wait for pictures. I am also lame at posting pic's and the moderators have been EVER so paitient with me about this.

No worries!!
This IS that site!!!! You get ready!!! Post it here!!!!

I'm betting these will sell, as we say over here, like hot cakes!

Assuming "sterling" is a "pound" then that works out to be about $412 US dollars. Quite reasonable for a high quality shock.

I'd be curious about them, do post some pictures when you can!

Hi Steve,

obviously there's a problem when we have to take currency exchange rates into consideraton, but to put things into perspective - here in the UK a similar spec STEEL bodied shock is about 30% more expensive, and the nearest alloy bodied equivalent [ Ikon ] is about 50% more expensive. Hope that gives you a comparison.

I'll have a go at mastering pic posting in the next few days,

TJ
