It's starting to get a little chilly out there, and this will be my K1100RS's first winter (with me as a rider).
Her previous owner seems to have been a weather wimp, therefore I have no heated grips, tall enough wind shield or hand guards.
I'm planning to ride as long as there's no ice on the ground, what are your recommendations for above mentioned gadgets? _________________ ---------------------

If your core is warm (your torso), then your body can maintain the extremities much easier. So with a heated jacket (vests don't warm the arms) and heated grips, you'll probably be good in rather frigid temps.
I bought the TourMaster stuff last year. I wanted to try the new carbon technology. I was hoping all the wiring wouldn't be so noticable. It's just as noticable as on a Gerbing. Works fairly well, although the gloves don't crank up nearly as much as the jacket. But they do keep the fingers from turning into popsicles. I like that they don't nickel and dime you for controllers, although there's no dual controller option. You can run two separate controllers, though (or more if you have the chaps, too - they call em pants). _________________ M N B

Invest in a good jacket and get your heated grips up and running, you can get an aftermarket set for 40 and get them installed for 100ish.
I live out in Nassau and ride in to Brooklyn 2x a week, it was cold coming home at 9pm.
I ride year round as well so it can be done in our area. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I put on the heated grips as well. I ride year round in NJ and the grips were enough for my 30-40 min commute each way. I do put on long underwear for my legs. My torso is completely bundled up and is fine. _________________ 93 K1100RS

When I first started riding I had like a $0 budget so I wore my work Carharts to keep warm.
I have since moved up to a set of Gerbings jacket and gloves.
My 1st bike didn't have heated grips, and my new(to me) one has em, but I havn't used them yet, maybe this morning, it's around 40. _________________ Ride safe.

On the RS keeping the weather off REALLY helps keep you warmer.
I got my 93 RS with an Aero Flow that is easy on & off and works really well keeping the weather at bay.
If you do not mind replacing the entire windshield, Parabellum makes a system that bolts on. There's a used one for half price on the IBMW riders web site. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

The core is key to survival, but nothing makes you more miserable than cold hands and feet. My BMW grips keep me toasty well into the ten's, cranked on high with fleece lined gloves, no liners needed.
I have a parabellum windshield and fairing on mine, and it works awesome. I can be taken off easily enough to simply take on and off for the colder months.
Beside my grips I do not use electric gear. I do not trust it enough to not blow a fuse 100 miles away from the nears auto parts place, or have a wire break inside the vest and not get any heat at all. So I use thermal gear and layers. I have a killer pair of snowmobiling pants that are not bulky, but warm as all get out. Water and windproof I need to put them on outside or I get overheated very quickly. They come up to the chest, so usually a long sleeved t, a sweat shirt and then my waterproof armored jacket are good enough for me to ride down into the 10's as well.
Helmet keeps the head and face warm, and a fleece neck tube, I am all set. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

+1 on heated vest/jacket. I picked up a used aerostich heated fleece vest for $70 a few years ago and keeping at least your core warm is where it's at. Mine just has an on/off siwtch which is alll I really need.
If you want to mess with the wires heated gloves are supposedly better than heated grips but I find that heated grips with Thinsulate lined winter gloves do OK in the 30s. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Do you happen to recall the URL for the parabellum ad, I can't find it on that site.
Thanks

ABSOLUTELY. HUGE difference having an Aeroflow. Gotta' get out of the wind.
I see the die-hard H-D riders out this time of year, almost all without any windshield. They look REALLY cold.
I dislike the look of my brick with the Aeroflow on, but this time of year there is no choice. If you are out in the breeze without something to block the wind, you are just losing body heat- very rapidly in cold temps.
Heated grips, heated vest and the Aeroflow combined with my legs behind the fairing allows me to ride down to 30 F comfortably.
Truly NIGHT and DAY difference with a good coverage windshield.

I use Gerbing heated pants liners and Chili heated socks, controlled through a Gerbing 'Heat-'troller'. I converted my own jacket to heated, using the heat4u kit available from the 'net. By trimming 6 feet from the supplied cable, I still stayed within safe levels for the wiring and control gear (I use another heat-'troller just for the jacket), but now I can really turn it up to 'sweat-inducing' levels if needed .
Of course we never get weather really cold enough to give it a thorough workout, and even if we did, I'm not stupid enough to ride in it when there's a perfectly decent car outside , but the kit has come in useful on a few occasions. _________________

Thanks everyone for the extensive and helpful replies.
I have been able to secure a used Aeroflow windshield from Craigslist, and purchased the Tourmaster Heated Jacket Liner and Gloves.
Hopefully, that combination, along with thermal pants and extreme winter hiking socks will keep me going. If my legs turn to ice, I will go for the Tourmaster Heated Chaps too, but hopefully I won't need the hand guards and the heated grips.

For those of you who ride down into the 20s/30s, do you find that you need heated grips *and* gloves, or can you get away with just the grips? |

I have a pair of heavily insulated gloves. I can "get away with" riding in the 30s with heated grips - though I've heard that (and beleive) heated gloves are the bomb. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
