Hi all,
Well on the way to work this morning when filtering past stationary traffic (15-20mph) a nice white van driver decided to turn right without looking in his mirrors, BANG one dead K and a very bruised me.
Where i was trying to avoid him the engine hit the wheel studs of his front wheel and tore a hole in the cam cover and snapped the cam chain, one bollard later (after i bailed out to stage right) and the front wheel, forks and i think the frame are bent, sump full of oil on the pavement, NOT a good day, loved my K now have to start to look for another one to get when the insurance pays out.
Getting a loan bike but they dont have anything on the like for like basis till tuesday, could have had a lesser one but they couldnt say what it would be, only from 50-1000cc just see me doing 80 mile a day on a moped

Glad to hear you're alive. Sorry about your K. That really sucks.
I'm having trouble visualizing your accident from your description. If you were filtering and the van turned to the right how did his front wheel hit the cam cover? Unless you're talking about the valve cover. (Here in the US we generally refer to the left side cover as the valve cover and the right side cover as the cam cover since it's over the main cam.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the replies and yes it could have been a whole lot worse for me, getting stiffer by the minute and thinking of going to see the doctor but I am alive at least.
Cam cover is the valve cover in Blighty (on the left of the bike) the one on the right we call the crankcase cover (covers the crankshaft) the wheel stud punched a hole right over the exhaust cam sprocket and sheared the chain, not even going to bother to look what engine damage there is, no doubt all the valves are bent and pistons holed as i was in 1st gear, i like to keep the revs up when filtering so people can (or should) hear me, guess he had his radio up too loud.
Will take a few pic's when i get to work tomorrow and post them when i get home, going to have a better look too to see if the frame is bent,
Just been looking and there isnt alot of K1100's for sale in the UK at the moment just hope one comes up when the insurance pays out, really dont want to get anything else but another RS, loved the way it rode and felt on the road, real pain is i just put a new clutch in her.

Rob,
Sorry about the crash caused by the white van driver. When you total a bike it's damn tough to find another of the same model as good as the one you had. Good luck!
And Duck, remember he's in the UK and a right turn there is the same as a left turn into our lane here. It sounds like Rob cut to his right to try and get out of the vans way and got hit on the left side.

You should join the BMW Club Rob. We've had quite a few in The Journal recently (There's a peach in there at the the moment), and they're always cropping up on the club Forum (see my sig for a link). _________________

Hi all, yes did try to avoid by going to the right, no way to stop in time so downshifted to 1st and gunned it so the revs were up, hence the suspected engine damage when the cam chain went. I can still see the chain on the exhaust sprocket but not sure of the direction of rotation, i assume the rest of the chain is now in the sump or wrapped around the crankshaft.

I am a member of the forum and will keep a lookout, will be looking at spending about £1500 -£2000 so hope to get a decent example.
I think the insurance company will make mine a CAT B break only write off so i wont be able to repair it, had a better look today and the frame i think is ok, forks are twisted but do look striaght.
Im hoping Its CAT C and i will be able to keep her and maybe do a rebuild.

Sorry to hear about your smash Rob, as others have said, glad you're OK.
I recall lying in the road in Italy (1984) with my r leg practically severed shouting at the blind woman who had hit me that she'd wrecked my beautiful bike! At the time it seemed most important... Hope you can find another if yours is not viable.. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Rob
I have a very nice 45,000 miler which I have completely refurbished over the past 9 months.
It's a '94 L reg with ABS II, everything in full working order.
Fitted with a superb tall screen -
http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4330&highlight=tall+screen
I restore classic bikes as a hobby, and I bought the K11 as a favour to a contact in the trade.
It has been a revelation, and I will now always have a big tourer in my garage.
I have just bought an '04 R1150 RT project, so I would be interested in letting the K11 go to a good home.
I'm near Wigan - M6 Jn 26 (Main line Euston-Glasgow), is that too far to travel ?
PM for details if ur interested
Rgds

Hi Chopper
Really looking for an RS, only seen a few and are anywhere between £1500 - £3500 for the same sort of year!!!!
Been totting up the cost of doing mine using S/H parts and its at least £1500 so far, guess she is a lost cause
Will have a look and might have to have an LT anyway.
Got the loan bike from my insurance company its an 07 VFR 800 HATE IT, it arrived yesterday and been on the phone to them already to get it changed, did about 8 miles on it last night and had to get off due to my hands hurting, also it is WAY to revvy, where i could trickle around in top at 30mph and just open the throttle on my K this wont even pull in 4th at 30.
On the Plus side the headlights are fantastic, like riding in the day with them on.

Sorry to hear of your crash. It's good that you are okay except for some bruising.
I hate to pass cars anywhere except when I'm in the other lane. Did some lane splitting in California once when I first picked up the bike (radiator fan was blown and it was the only way to keep from overheating). Scared the hell out of me.

There's a fair amount of riders who claim lane-splitting is safer than not since it reduces the chances of getting rear-ended or hitting the car in front of you if it slams on it's brakes. Not sure if I agree with that line of thinking but the argument does have some merit IMO.
I always swore I woudl never lane-split - until I got stuck on the Santa Monica freeway at 5pm on a Friday. Since then I've become a big fan of it. Not only can you make good time but there's video game-like element of fun to it - you only get one quarter though. Not sure if I'd do it 2-up. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well when i got hit i was on the other lane and not lane splitting, it was in town and the traffic was stationary in a jam, I had a clear view of the road ahead, started to pass (in the middle of the opposite lane) when the van driver got fed up waiting and decided to take a short cut through a service road to some flats (private road NOT a junction), he didn't indicate or look.
The first words out of his mouth after i had picked myself up were "you must have been speeding" when i pointed out the bike had travelled 15 feet from the point of impact he then said "oh i didn't see you"
My journey to work is a mix of fast A roads, Town and standing traffic, I'm alway very careful when passing to look for indicators or for a driver looking like he is going to turn.
The van has power steering and as soon as he started to move he was on full lock and over the other side of the road, I had no chance.
Rode the VFR800 to work today for the first time and was so so careful, to the point of holding up other bikers, I hate the VFR, in town anything more than 2nd gear it is gutless to the point of being dangerous, least my K could easily pull in top to get past without having to cog swap all the time.
Told my insurance company I wanted a different loan bike and that are giving me a ST1300 Pan European in the next few days, i hope that will have a bit more torque.
Thanks for all the good wishes, now all i need to do is argue with his insurance over the payout, still if I dont agree with the price it will cost them another £900 a week for the loaner that should make them see sense.
