My friend Alex was in an accident Saturday morning just out side of Morrison, Colorado. I was leading and about 100 yards ahead of Alex when I checked my mirror and saw his bike (K1200RS) skidding across the road and hitting the guard rail. I had just gotten out of the first right hand sweeper and Alex had apparently side swiped a small car; hit is low on the driver side door. Alex ended up in the middle of the road and the bike kept going. I got turned around and could see him moving as I came back and I was just thinking 'get up Alex and get out of the road' but he couldn't. Alex broke both of his legs.
His right leg is broken in his upper femur and down low where the tibia enters the ankle, the doctor's said it was pretty much shattered. His left leg is broken with a compound fracture about mid calf and both bones are broken. They will insert rods in both the femur and his left tibia. The ankle will have to be put into some type of appliance that will pull the ankle away from the bone end and then they will operate on it in 7-10 days after the swelling has subsided. He went into surgery last night about 5 and it was expected to last about 4 hours.
Alex suffered only minor upper body injuries slight abrasion on his left arm. His head did not seem to hit the pavement as his helmet shows no marks what so ever. All he can remember is setting up to enter the turn and then being on the ground.
Alex has strong Christian beliefs so any prayers will be greatly appreciated.
Ride safe, it can happen in an instance.
Thanks,

Though not life threatening those sound like some pretty nasty injuries.
So he has no idea what happened? Did the driver of the car stop?
Anyhow, I hope things go well for him on the healing and recovery front.... _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Just got back from visiting him at the hospital. He is in an 'Intermediate Care' ward. Beautiful view of the mountains.
Operation last night didn't get over until 11:00 p.m (5.5 hours). Doctors were pleased that everything slipped into place fine. His femur was broken in 4 different places. He is in pretty good spirits and has a self controlled pain drip, so that is nice . The hospital is thinking a 4-5 day stay although one doctor said Monday afternoon, which for what he has just gone through I would say bullllsh**. His coworkers are already building him a wheel chair ramp from his garage to his house. It is amazing how people can pull together for one-another when there is real need.
Yes, fortunately his injuries are not life threatening; just painful and highly inconvenient. Cannot put weight on his left leg for at least 6 weeks and on his right for at least 12 weeks. The person he hit stopped immediately and was on the phone to 911 when I was able to get turned around, back there, parked and off the bike. Lots of people stopped to help.
I will keep his recovery posted.
Again thank you for your thoughts.

An update on Alex.
He was released from the hospital about 2 and a half weeks ago. First week at home was going fairly well then last week on Monday he went in for a check up with the doc. They had him in surgery again that evening for an infection in his broken ankle (shattered) and again on Wednesday morning more surgery on the ankle. I stopped in on Tuesday to see how he is doing and a home health care nurse was there dressing his surgical scar/entry. Seems that they left it open this time.
The opening is about 3-4 inches long 1 inch wide and about 3/4 inch deep. You can see down to his bone, way cool. They are dressing it with some type of "WoundVac" which when given an airtight seal around the wound and some foam packing in the wound draws down a vacuum and pulls his bodily fluid through the wound for better healing. They also had threaded an intravenous catheter in his left bicep up into some artery in his mid chest so his wife can shoot him up with some type of antibiotic every day. He is not reacting well to the antibiotic, makes him pretty nauseous.
He is in great spirits and should be back to work about mid November.
Ride safe.

Pretty neat....this is the stuff I deal with every day on the job. VACs and PICC lines. (I do advanced dressing/wound care and IV infusions in the patients home)
PICC = Peripherally inserted central catheter.
