I just got back from a 900 mile weekend. I stopped at a nearby eatery for some food before heading home. When I rolled the bike backwards out of the parking spot, I could feel and occasional grinding (as well as hear it). It happens about once every 12 feet.
It was dark, so my brief inspection was visually limited, but I couldn't see anything unusual on the tire tread, sidewall, rotors or stuck under the fender. I did notice that one side of the new brake pads looks poorly bevelled and the other side looks square. SJBMW installed them a month or so ago. That's when I posted about brakes being rather touchy. But bevelling is a common trick to help prevent squealing, which these brakes, which haven't squealed in years if ever, are now doing a little.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to look for. It only happens rolling backwards, so I really don't think it could be the wheel bearing, but I'm open to suggestions and explanations - an expert at mechanics I am not. _________________ M N B

Check to see if a caliper is loose. Or maybe it's not releasing properly. Every 12 feet? That seems funny, how about the fender clearance? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Is it grinding or rattling? My bobbins have a bit of play in them and whenever I back my bike out of the garage, I get a rattling noise from the disks. Also, over road cracks through town I noticed a rattling from the front end that I couldn't identify for the longest time. It was driving me nuts. I recently discovered both noises could be eliminated entirely with a slight application of the front brakes. Try rolling backwards while applying slight pressure on the brake. I found that the rattle disappeared. I'll change the bobbins soon.

I've noticed bobbin rattle when I move the bars left and right, it's always made a bit of noise doing that. But thanks for the suggestion on trying it with the brakes! If it goes away, I know it's the pads. I'm certain the grinding isn't the bobbins. The pads are less than 2 months old.
If it doesn't go away, I'll pull the fenders off to look for objects stuck in there, like perhaps a tumbleweed I failed to avoid when dodging them in the high winds out by Lake Topaz this weekend. That was kinda fun, actually. _________________ M N B

The pads have nothing to do with loose/worn bobbins. Two different things. _________________ Current Bikes

Replace the bobbins. Mine are getting old on the LT and it makes noise bacling out of the garage too.

FYI mine made the same noise when the bobbins were worn. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

The bike is no longer making the noise. I jacked it up to get the front wheel off the ground, it hardly made the noise at all. I spun it both directions several rotations with little effect. Went to work, came home, was going to try backing up with light pressure on brakes, but it's not making the noise anymore with no brakes applied anyways.
I just had pads put in 2 months ago. Shouldn't they have told me the bobbins needed replacing? _________________ M N B
