Just wanted to let you know that Phil Marvin hit a deer tonight[Saturday(9:30PM)] near Tyrone, NM. The K11 is totaled and he has a broken arm, broken collar bone, broken shoulder blade and a jammed thumb and a LOT of road rash. [Different arms, natch!] He never lost consciousness and was *found* almost immediately by a car that he was following, who, when they *lost* his headlight, turned around and went back to see what happened. He was taken to the local hospital who bundled him up in a chopper and sent him to El Paso, where I beat him to the ER. When the fellow who found him called me, I could hear Phil in the background telling anyone who was there what his medical situation was. And, he was mad. [Da***ed hooved vermin!] It may be a while, but I'm sure that we're going to be in the market for another K1100LT. What a thrilling summer this is going to be.
Tonight we found out that the doc wanted to release him today(Tuesday). To where?? He hadn't even been up to go to the bathroom. BOTH hands are wrapped up like a boxer. What kind of MORON is this doctor anyway??? I can't take care of him, I have my own medical problems AND I am packing the house for a move!
The K11 is junk with deer meat and fur wedged into the broken fairing. Smells wonderful. Lots of neat, usable parts, though. I'm sure that when he does get home, he will spend lots of hours sitting at the computer expounding on the experience.
Personally, I hope they keep him till Thursday.
Pray for ME!

Thanks much for the update, and please send Phil our very best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Sounds bad, but I'd imagine it could have been a whole lot worse! _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Harriet:
Boy am I sorry to hear that. But at least he survived and doesn't have any life threatening injuries. Bikes can be replaced, people cannot.
Give Phil my best and wish him a speedy recovery.
Thanks for letting us know.
You will both be in my prayers.
Cheers,

Where are the laser death cannons when you need them?? Bet he'd like the smell of instant venison! We don't get much in the way of deer here in NZ, we get feral sheep in the verges (that slipped thru the fences as lambs and then grew up)... I don't know if deer are skittier than sheep, but the being white to see them still don't help if they do the panic-jump thing, and being lower, they definitely take out the front wheel. Either way, I can sympathize with the write-off and the being p*ssed off with the stupid animal(s), it's just good he's OK enough to be angry, eh?
Seriously, give him my best (for what it's worth) and do take care of yourself too - and good luck with the move (him & the house).

Thank you for letting us know about this, Harriet. We'd all wonder what happened to Phil if he just quit posting. Having both hands bandaged does preclude some of the necessities of life. Good luck to you! And for you're sake i hope he's a fast healer. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Harriet:
I have sympathy for you both. I live in Maine where deer, moose, bear, turkey and lesser size animals are a constant hazard. It is especially dangerous at night. Our very narrow, twisty, up and down 2 lane back roads don't let you have much warning and give small room to maneuver. The possibility of a encounter such as your mate had is always on my mind. I wish him a speedy convalescence and you a speedy and uneventful move.

Sounds painful. But glad to hear he'll heal up OK. Your story will make me ride another 10 mph slower next time I go out at night. |

Hi, All,
I'm typing this with 3 fingers on my left hand, so bear with me. Sat.
night, 6/30, about 9:30pm, I hit a deer at about 65mph while riding my
K1100LT. I haven't seen the bike, but Harriet tells me it will be
totaled. There is skin and fur hanging from the remains of the
fairing. I took my first helicopter ride, a bit over 150 miles, from
Silver City, NM to the county hospital in El Paso, TX. I have road
rash on both knees and both elbows, a dislocated left thumb, a radial
fracture of the right humerous (upper arm), a broken right clavicle
(collarbone), a cracked right scapula (shoulder blade), cracked ribs
on the right side, and a small pneumothorax (lung puncture). But, I'M
ALIVE!!!
I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and read all the
messages of support. Thanks, guys, for all you've said. Some of the good stuff even has a bit of truth in it! I need to make appointments with
the trauma surgeon in a week or so and the orthopedic surgeon in a
couple of weeks. I can't get around without help naw. (Have you ever
thought about washing, eating or even wiping your butt with one arm
and the other hand in a cast?) Harriet has been of inestimable help in these matters. We are in the process of moving from El Paso to Silver City, NM, so we do not expect to have internet access untol sometime Wednesday. Keep all your thoughts and prayers coming; they are much appreciated.

Hey, Phil:
That's GREAt to hear that you're finally out of the hospital - and alive of course. (Though Harriet probablyy wants to kill you for having this happen right when you're moving. )
Thanks for the update and I hope your surgeries go well.
Get well soon,
Drake

Bikes can be replaced.
People cannot.
Glad you are on the up-and-up Phil, but I didn't really doubt that, because you have one of the most important attributes for a quick recovery.......a winning attitude.
Make sure you buy your wife some ice cream from time to time. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

So glad to hear from you, you ARE alive! When you have better use of your appendages I hope we get a detailed account of what you remember. Did you get to scrub anything off that 65 mph? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT
