No, this is not about Groucho's missing brother.

On the MOA forum a question was posted about the little twin tick marks on our speedometers at 40, 80 and approx. 135 mph.

Take a look at yours.

What is their purpose???

I've always thought they were similar to suggested shift points that some cars speedos have - that's just a guess though. Owners manual doesn't mention them.

Thought the same thing but that would mean that the shift from 3rd to 4th would occur at 135 mph!!!

Calibration points for use when the speedo is connected to a known good signal generator.

The UK police forces use a company called IRS, in Nottingham, to calibrate their speedometers.
IRS have their test rigs independently certified, and can provide K bike speedo accuracy better than +- 0.5%.

I know that for our colonial cousins, the IRS has another, far more sinister meaning Wink

Calibration marks makes sense.

I guess BMW must use those marks to be absolutely sure the speedo reads 10% high out of the factory. Laughing

Hey, I'm kind of getting used to that "cushion". On the interstate I keep to an indicated 75-80 (65 mph speed limit) and know that LEOs probably won't give me a second look.

I have my bikes calibrated to run just a wee bit fast. When the speed limit is 60 I run 70 indicated which my GPS tells me is 68-69ish.

I always thought they were range marks for operating variables, like lean angle and shaft angle. As both affect the speedo reading.

They can make EVERY ONE OF THEM read the same amount fast. The same effort could be used to make EVERY ONE OF THEM read correctly.

They have much less liability exposure if they speedos read high vs. low That's always been my theory anyhow.

Oh crap. Here I thought I really was going 75-80 mph and the fairing just made it feel slower than my naked Goldwing.

You're in Burbank - it's because the cars are whizzing by you when you're doing an actual 75. Very Happy

I aggree with the ducks 10MPG+ reading on the speedo, my K100 is dead on, but I can say this machine (K1100) is an incredible power improvement over the old.

I was leading a ride this weekend on Ca 49 and was getting air on the LT over minor whop-de-doos where the old '85 K would just go over and stay in constant contact with the road.

I admitt the 1100 is not an R-1 but it is way impressive over the old K bike.

My only bitch is the radiator going to 2 core and the non availability of 3 core units....

I know its a fetish thing with me.... 3 core vs 2 core...
