My wife and I, were traveling from Manteca CA to West Sacramento CA North on the I-5 today (in our 04’ 2500 Chevy Silverado PU) doing well above the posted speed. We came across a goup of hogs in the fast lane, that were adamant (in my opinion) about not letting a “cadger” to pass. Seriously… What a bunch of ASSHOLES!!!

I see this a lot around here. Mainly loud piped Hardley types doing 50 mph and then getting pissed when you pass them. Usually one of the group will come out and try getting cute, at least until there is a corner. That is the story on the bike, anyway.

Was it possible to pass them on the right? Or did they speed up to prevent you from passing? Just proves that the roads are populated with assholes the ever greater numbers. And they were probably thinking the same thing about you.

Personally, I like seeing the non-helmeted tough guys struggle at high speed on their big iron. I've seen more than one start looking down at the engine and pulling over after a little while. It's got to be a real joy riding a loud piped, vibrating piece of crap at 90+.

P.S.- Did you mean to say "etiquette"?

Sure shootin!
Happens all the time coast to coast.
But I got the last laugh yesterday.
Four clowns, all HD's. 2 lanes, 68MPH in a 65, got the whole road covered cept the saftey lanes.
I roll up at 88, hang for maybe 10 seconds. Hold far left lane, still no go.
Flash brights, that's what the euro switch is for right? This just amazes them & then slow down more!!! WTH!!!!!
Now they are waving at me with all sorts of freindly gestures. Two of them are heavily tatto'd and I can see that cause their saftey equipment is a pair of sunglass's. Funny looking waves two with all sorts of fingers splayed & elbow gyrations.
I wave back of course. they still appear unfriendly.
Oh well, nuff flocking around. I blip down, power up, go hard left & around the clowns, bye bye.

Oh good!!! They want me to lead cause now they are right on my butt & following. Come on guys! I'll show ya how to have fun on the slab.
Still running just under 90, so's I wick it up to 105, roads wide open and I wanna beat that rain moving in. Mr tattoo stays with it, but it looks hard for him. My RS is made for this.
Here comes the rain, my gear is water proof. I slow down to rain speed of 80, still no traffic. Then he gives what I think is a final wave good bye & good luck. Funny club style waves they all got that's for sure.
All the HD's are gone now, then it hits me, gee, that rain has gotta hurt on your face at that speed.
Oh well, hope the rain don't spoil their ride too much, hope they can learn to stay out of the left lane or at least not to block both lanes on a two lane, and finally, hope they learned those slick looking BMW's can pretty easily out gun them on most any road.
Here's to hoping, but I doubt they will learn or change.

Yeah, JP-

A little over a year ago, I am riding with a couple of friends on a two lane rural road. We come upon a bunch of Hardley's going about 50 mph. We were cruising at 75 or so. My two buddies, one K12RS and one R11RS get by pretty quickly. I can't pass right then but on the next straight, one of the group pulls out in front of me and here we go.

I'm on my Ducati (sold since then) and just keep behind him as he is bellowing down the road. I think his idea was to catch my buddies and show 'em some real American performance. We come to a sweeper at about 95, mind you this is not a corner, more like a curve- nothing to slow down for on a decent bike. This thing starts into a gyrating death wobble and Hardley guy has his hands full. No helmet, of course, and nothing but jeans and crash protective T-shirt. I notch a downshift or two and pass him around the curve, accelerating all the time to catch my buds.

Didn't see them anymore after that.

Frank

As far as etiquette when encountering a group like that in a car/truck- I think there is no way to do anything that wouldn't inflame the situation. Unless you just wait for the assholes to not be assholes and let you by. Even on the bike, it's hard to imagine how to deal with this without letting it get out of control.

Usually the performance of our bikes determine the outcome. The ME FIRST syndrome is rampant in motorcycling and everywhere else these days.

I spend some time sitting behind 4 cruisers north of Big Sur this spring. Finally found a legal passing zone, chopped it down to third and bogied past all four them. Then went back to my usual 8 over on the straights. Looked in my mirror and one of them had zoomed up and was right behind me. I have no idea why. No hand signals or horns. Then we hit some turns and I started cooking. B-Bye! Very Happy

And the chrome...DON'T FORGET THE CHROME, MAN!!!! Think of all that polishing Twisted Evil Razz Very Happy In reality, he probably slowed down because he was close to using up his (touring) tank's 65 miles worth of gas, and having covered such a huge distance since his last fill-up, his arms would have been getting tired anyway.. Razz

On the upside, those bandanas must dry in no time at all.

There's an urban myth here in the UK of the Harley owner so used to having a 15" wide rear tyre, that when he did eventually buy a BMW, he tried suing the company because he said it was a dangerous design fault that when he stopped at an intersection, he had to put his feet on the floor to stop it falling over...

I always thought that HD were revered in the U.S. of A...or is that just by Harley owners? Why then do the Tuttles (we get to see some of their antics on an obscure cable channel) and events like Sturgis attract such an apparently huge following? Mob mentality perhaps? Rolling Eyes

Culturally-reinforced cognitive dissonance.

And I confess to being an enabler. Even though much of that ch1t makes me Rolling Eyes , deep down I wouldn't hate the guilty pleasure of occasionally shaking the earth by grabbing a fist-full. I think is has something to do with testosterone.
