Last night was the latest tipover. In the latest stupidity I was driving around a small parking lot trying to read the parking regulations. Stopped the bike with wheel turned and over it it went. I am very quick now at wedging myself under it and calling for bystanders to help before anything gets scratched. Each tipover has been some variation of stopping with the wheel turned. I thought that after 15 months and 11000 miles my days of stupidity were over. Do I need more low speed practice? Longer legs (currently 32" inseam)? Does anyone else have these problems?

More practice! And never stop a two-wheeled vehicle with the wheel turned.

Ride an LT for a while and keep that upright. Once you master that keeping an RS upright will be a piece of cake.

Stock seat? Get a lower seat? Add thicker soles/boots?
Have you been to a doctor to have your equilibrium checked out or do you fall or tip over when NOT on the bike? Bar stools do not count.
Loose your balance at other times?
The K1100's are good sized bikes, pay attention, keep your balance.

If you have to look around, park it & walk.

Do you exercise regularly? Work on those legs, keep them in tip top shape & it'll help you in all sorts of ways.

Worse case scenerio, get a side car?

Having the front sides of the seat foam shaved can help some too.

I'm an avid runner and bicyclist so I don't think that's the problem. Luckily I've never had a problem when moving, just stopped. There seems to be such a short time between "Oh NO" and the time when one leg cannot hold the bike up.

Stupidity is still the most likely culprit since I have fallen over at stop signs clipped into bike pedals, too.

I think my surprise is how much concentration is needed at low speed maneuvering.

I need to have my Corbin seat recovered. Can I just ask them to narrow it? BTW, thanks for all the comments.

Who are you having recover it? Of course you can ask anyone who recovers your seat to modify it - why not?

Sure, most anyone whom can recover a seat can shave the foam.

Tire profile could affect this too I think. I'm new to K1100's but been around the block a time or two. I have Michelin Pilot 2.0's on mins & it balances GREAT!

But then, I moved up from an 1981 R100RS with those skinny tires on it.

I LOVE MY K1100RS!!!!

But it brings out the Twisted Evil in me.

So VERY much fun!

Lord Gondor,

Welcome to the club. I tipped my LT over right in front of my driveway a few weeks ago. I turned to head into my driveway and stopped to make sure I was lined up because I was headed between a car and a pickup with just enough room to avoid banging mirrors. When I put my foot down I touched a thin layer of gravel and my foot slipped and the bike began to rotate. When I got my foot planted it was too late and the bike rolled over onto my leg and I was stuck. Luckily, a couple of husky young guys pulled up in a Blazer and picked the bike up just seconds after it went over. I had leather on so there was no injury except to my pride.

Gravity is nothing to mess with.

Ed

That's for sure. I did the same slow turn thing in a parking lot. Seemed in slow motion. It just rolled on top of me. Quickly picked it up before anyone saw me.

The LT with a high CG is even harder to get used to because I trade off riding my naked Goldwing with a lower than normal CG. On those hot days I just love the wind going through my mesh jacket without a fairing/windshield. Cool

Happend to me in a parking lot. All but zero speed but with front wheel turned sharply right and -bam- down we went. Nothing hurt (ego bruised) and I learned how the mirrors attach. Since then I'm wary. I'm 5'9" riding a 94 K1100LT and can't flat foot both sides.
I understand also about gravel or slippery when the holding foot hits the ground.

Very Happy I did make the trip to Gillette for the 36th MOA rally. Good ride. 2,200 miles.

Amen. Surely you were trained to wheel and handle a bike properly?

Hello Lord Gondor,

I sympathize since I am also a 32" inseam. I use BOTH feet when I stop - unlike what I was taught in motorcycle safety school. The Corbin seat is great try scooting a bit forward in the seat since it is narrower there. I did try big heels for a little while but now that I'm comfortable with the bike have gone back to regular motorcyle shoes.

Also until you are very comfortable with the bike dont try to stop in dirt or gravel. Please dont ask me why I recommend this. Embarassed

Sanjiv

I too have been down and from what I have heard "you go where your eyes are looking". That is why when we were taught to ride always keep your head up. Don't look to close in front of the bike. Keep your eyes up and ahead.

I know it can be difficult when maneuvering to park or moving slow or looking for dangers (sand, potholes) etc. And like an earlier post stated do not have a turned wheel when your stopped. I have been working on all that this year. Me and my K1100RS have been down a few times.

And the Kr's is a top heavy bike. Once it starts going over it is a bugger to stop it.

I didn't see this in any of the above replies but using the front brakes with the wheel turned at slow speeds will put you down quickly! I don't cover my front brake in parking lots for that reason.

Especially stay off the front brake during slow turns, keep feet on the pegs and stop with front wheel straight.

This must be it. I only use the front brake in parking lots. Thanks I'll try this hint!

Ironically I've stopped with the wheel turned sharply for 15 months now. It's the only way I can turn around at the end of my steep driveway. If you're ready for it it isn't a big deal.

I've had it happen as well, with the front wheel turned. Now I always keep a light application of the front brake and a quick application has since prevented the front wheel front rolling under while backing and parking, or turning the wheel too quickly while walking it.
