Close my office at 1 or so on Fridays. Finally a sunny day after all the rain we have been getting.

Thought I would let everyone see my playground where I do local rides. These roads start about 10 miles from my house.

lake at the top of Kinsman Notch

top of the 'Kanc (Kancamagus Highway)

turn out at the top of the Kanc

just before I headed back down. Right after this was taken, a red RS passed going the other way, giving a big wave.

5pm rush hour as I go home

No, that's just discolored and in the shadow of the bag

wheres the moose...

My constant fear. On this very road, 5 years ago, a friend riding his airhead lost his life when he hit a moose. It is beyond me why these walking accidents are being encouraged to multiply in a tourist area. Tourists have no idea how big these things are and how deadly they are to ANY vehicle.

Reminds me of the sign as you enter Maine on I-95 - "XX People Have Died This Year From Collisions With Moose").

As for the pics, you are a lucky when it comes to riding roads in the neighborhood! Well, at least 8 or so months out of the year Laughing

How about some suggestions on lesser awesome roads in the are besides the ones all the tourist bikers (like me) have ridden. I promise I won't tell anyone Twisted Evil

OK, I'd tell someone but then I'd have to kill them....

But for you guys, I'll spill the beans.

Rt 118. Take the Kanc west from Lincoln a few miles. It will be on your left. Long, twisty up then long twisty down to Warren. Pavement is pretty good (was really great a couple of years ago when they repaved). Just don't expect your cell phone to work if the need arises.

Bear Notch Road on the Kanc is good, but lots of tourists.

Hard surface, but unpaved- Tripoli Road East off exit 31 of Interstate 93. We have been on it 2-up on the RS- no sweat. Takes you up to Waterville Valley Ski Area and you can get back to I-93 by Rt-49 (paved)

On this edition of John reveals where the curves are, I have saved the very best for last, but it'll take some work:
If you are venturing over to Barre/Montpelier, Vt, I've got a really great backroad route. Coming east out of Barre on Rt-302, when you get to East Barre, look for Rt-110 south (on your right). It starts off looking like straight roads, but gets more interesting as you go. When you get to Chelsea, take a left onto Rt-113. This CLIMBS & turns , and CLIMBS & turns.... When it finally gets to the top and it looks like you might start to go down there is a service station on your right. On your left is the Chelsea Road. Take it. (I think there is a sign, but not sure) There is a crappy sign for something like the Vershire Riding Academy.

Stay on Chelsea Road until a T intersection at (I'm not making this up) Goose Green. Turn RIGHT. Go until this road hits another T intersection. Turn left onto Rt-25 Waits River Road. Go a couple of miles or so until Village Road on your right just before an abandoned gas station/store. That takes you up through East Corinth, Topsham 4 Corners, East Topsham and eventually back on Rt-302.

On these routes you need to:

WATCH for wildlife!!!!!!!! Deer, moose and bear, mostly. I'm not kidding.

Obey town and village speed zones closely. Outside towns it isn't too closely observed (very infrequent but possible roaming troopers). But towns are tough on people going 45 in the 30. I know- I'm a Selectman in my town and our P.D. will pull you over for high 30's in our 30 zone.

Lastly, some of the turns are REALLY tight and depending on the recent weather there always could be sand/gravel in some corners- but most of the road surface is good.

So... if anyone wants to venture onto any of these routes- give me a couple of weeks advance warning and I will happily rearrange my appointment book to go riding with you.
