|
|
Tried to go for a ride today and got as far as Spirit Lake which is 6 miles up the road. My rear caliper evidently stuck closed and got so hot it caught on fire. I had filled a squirt water bottle to drink on the way and it's the only thing that save the bike.
So, the final drive was hot enough to boil water on, ABS sensor wire is toast, vent cap melted and the plastic cap on top of the caliper is gone. Got it loaded in a buddies trailer right now trying to figure out if I want to mess with it or take it to tech I know. What do you think needs to be done to make it right?
Too hot to touch now so I think it might have warped the rotor. Don't even know if I can get the caliper off the rotor! ABS sensor is probably toast, too.
Any ideas? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Damn Scott that blows.
I know it happened to Drake.
You didn't feel the rear dragging?
I got nuthin except wait till it cools, tear it down and start rebuilding. Drake should have most of the parts you need especially since he picked up the K100RS. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

This should serve as a warning to all. DO NOT overadjust the rear brake lever very tight with the set screw at the bottom of it.
Scott's started the caliper cover on fire while on mine the paralever boot caught fire. Imagine the heat it takes to make those parts spontaneously combust when they're not even in contact with the HOT rotor.
I talked to Scott on the phone and both of us agree that watching your bike burn is not a fun experience. But at least I get to blame mine on the guy who was test riding the bike to buy it. Yes, 'twas I who overtightened but it was the idiot not stopping when the brake was on who caused the fire.
Scott was on the freeway and thought he had a pinched fuel line - not realizing it was the brake that made him need so much throttle. A bit different situation than my idiot. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

No place to pull over and like Drake said thought it was a pinched fuel line because I had the tank off the day before. But I also adjusted the rear brake, seemed pretty straight forward and I've done it before. Just too much this time!
When the heat from the flames hit the underside of my thigh, that's when I decided to make a place to pull over! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Guys,
Thanks for the education. Good luck with getting your bike fixed soon.

The foot brake on the '95LT was a bit higher than the one on the '97. When I asked the shop foreman at Morton's if the pedal could be adjusted a little higher, I got a one word answer "no". I knew there was a screw down there, and had thought of adjusting, but now I'm glad I didn't.
Anyone else tried adjusting the foot brake without having the bike burst into flames??? _________________ Jim

Yes, I have adjusted that on all my K11's. The secret is to ensure that afterwards there is clearance, however small, between piston & push rod. _________________ Regards Tim,

Got a Priority mail package from Honest Duck's Used K Parts. Contained used caliper, ABS sensor, boot and disc/abs ring. Got it all broke down and reassembled yesterday. This AM I Mighty Vacuumed the rear modulator and caliper. Took a neighborhood ride and got the dreaded alternating abs warning lights.
I gapped the sensor 065 but I don't think that's the problem as the lights started flashing immediately upon turning the key. Hit the abs button and left one goes out and the right stays on solid.
Any suggestions? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

The ABS system is behaving as it should.
Hitting the ABS button on the dash will stop the blinking for 10 minutes, then it will start again.
If they are blinking at 'ignition on', you will need to do an ABS reset.
The process is extensively described in other posts and the sticky. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Yea, it's behaving like it's not working.

I printed the sticky when Mick posted it a couple of years ago but this is the first time I've really needed it. I should have said I tried to reset with no luck. Not sure if there is a code in there ( maybe "fried to a crisp sensor?") because I just tied to reset. But that's all I thought I needed to do as I had replaced the sensor. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

ABS black magic. Went up to the shop and tried resetting in various order. Key on, ground 2 pin, push button/ ground 2 pin, turn key on, push button and key on, push button, ground 2 pin.
I think the winner was #1 sequence but I'm not totally sure. I just know it wasn't the recommended one! Anyway lights flash simultaneously now as they should and as I took off to check on a test ride I heard the reassuring "click/click" and lights went out. Yea Jim, if you put a 2mm spacer in like the instructions say to it works fine. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I can't F__ing believe this!!! The Boot caught on fire today!!! Same exact scenario!!! The rear top cover of the caliper melted down and the tire side of the paralever boot caught on fire!!! I adjusted the rear brake pedal about 3000 miles earlier without any problems?? Pissed enough now to definately trade it on the GS. _________________ Dom |

Wow, Dom, that really bites. Did you experience sluggishness or any other clue(s) the rear was heating up? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I was on the freeway and the bike simply started to slow down. I was about 1/2 mile from my exit ramp when the symptoms started. By time I entered the ramp the bike simply would not roll any further and burst into flames. I made my way as far into the burm as possible, I used a full bottle of WEE Willie to help put the flames down. I didnt have any water Even at cost, I am looking at $900 in parts. Could have been worse though. _________________ Dom |
