Just wondered if anyone has managed to get a cracked downpipe successfully welded, given the grade of S/S?

2nd question - If anyone runs a Remus, how does this change the character of the bike? I really enjoy the sound of the engine and the exhaust note of the factory fitted silencer.

I managed it fine with a local welder in an industrial unit. Is it cracked where it joins the silencer?

Howdy from the midwest,

My bike came with a Remus pipe & most of the time I find it to
be an okay alternative to the steathy stocker. If you ride with
the hard bags installed there seems to be a louder resonance
which can be annoying, & slower in town speeds seem to cause
a louder drone than I'd like. But, if you want to exibit some
hooligan type youthful exuberance you can grab a handful &
let em rap. I doubt that I would have spent the money for this
exhaust system, but since it came with the bike I'm ok with it.

Blackhoof, I had mine welded twice and cracked again. Said to hell with it and put on a Remus. As far as sound is concerned, if it don't sound like a Harley, I am happy. I don't put too much into what the bike sounds like. We are riding not making records (or CD's for the younger crowd) Very Happy

I would rather have the quiet of a stock pipe. But after the FOURTH weld on mine, I put a Remus revolution pipe on. Don't worry about the cracking anymore, but I'm not in love with the sound. It's tolerable.

I like the Staintunes on my bikes. I don't notice an increase in noise over stock - though there might be a little. I checked their site - doesn't look like they make them for our Ks anymore though. Sad

But the best part is getting the rear wheel off of the RS without having to remove the whole friggin' exhaust assembly - just the can.

Last year, a mate who had gone down the R route Crying or Very sad gave me a 1/2" thick bit of wood with 4 1 1/4" holes equispaced, "whats that for?" I asked, "you'll need it soon" said he. Glad I had it too, along with a BIG Jubilee (don't know American Equivalent) clip to pull all the pipes together near the weld area. Probably, the reason for failures after re-weld, is that the pipes were not aligned before being glued. A few degrees / thou out & the stress will cause a short time before another failure. Only time will tell if my repair is any different. When my son took it to his "expert" the chap found other pipes showed fractures when it was warmed up. If you do go down the welding route, make sure they have Stainless experience.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the interesting responses, I had a feeling that the remus might be louder than the stock,and I do find the engine note quite sweet as it is. New stock from a dealer retails at just over £700.00, a 2nd used unit around £200.00. It's 12 year old bike, but for the pleasure it brings, worth every penny that I spend. Thanks again guys.

That's changed already. It's MP3s now.

Thing is, they still record the stuff before it's made into whatever release package (CD, MP3, etc)

I still call em albums. While most people think that refers to vinyl, it doesn't. A photo album is a book that is a collection of photos. An audio album is just a collection of recordings. That's my take anyways.

I've considered going with a Remus for a while, but my stock exhaust is still working fine, although some pitting/corrosion has occurred on the can. It's mostly hidden by the saddlebag on the LT anyways.

I saw a vid on youtube I think of a K bike with a remus and it definitely sounded louder, but nice. They make two different cans, street and sport. The street one is quieter. I don't know which one was in the vid...

Hi Adrian,

Had a quick look at your site - your KLT is the spit of mine - mine's a '96 model with 34500 on the clock at present. Off to Yorkshire this weekend, me and the bike, heaven, and the SatNav for directions. Have you been to a local meet yet? I keep intending to - one day.

Anyway back to the matter in question - I'm thinking if I can get a used exhaust, renew the studs and bolts, well not me, I don't have the wherewithall, but there is a guy in Cardiff who advertises in the journal. Better option than a Remus I think, and the new stock item is just over 700 quid.

I've made it to one or two meetings in the last 8 years, but keep meaning to get to more and out more as well.

Mike Pearce is the independent BMW tech in Cardiff, very good and a lot cheaper that Bath Rd! Just a bit further to travel.

Guys

Any repair on the 4-1 cluster will have limited success due to the initial factory fabrication.
The 4 pipes are mounted in a jig, which simulates the cyl head (one of the team mentioned a wooden block, to do just this Cool )

The open end of the 4 pipes will be welded together, and the central space puddled to form a single mass.

This region is impossible to repair, without opening the muffler itself.
Tacking up the outer areas of the pipes only solves 1/3 of the problem.

The only effective way to stop the pipes cracking again is to weld a 2"x1" gusset along each pair of pipes, upstream of the collector box.

My exhaust is knackered, but I picked up a tidy, solid unit on eBay for £40.
I plan to cut the old unit open, and see what is going on inside. The aim is to clean up the 4 pipes, and fabricate a new 4-1 collector pipe.

Similar to the Suzuki Bandit, this gives me a range of muffler options with a standard collector.

Well, that is the theory - let's see how this progresses Rolling Eyes

Like many others, mine cracked at the collector, and welding didn't work for long. I cut the headers off and welded on 4 stubs of SS tubing to form a slip fit joint. Seems to have fixed it, and it hasn't broken again.

Outstanding job - You have appx 1mm gap between the old pipes and the boss, which is spot-on.
I had been looking to buy four s/s pipes with a split at the end and clamp welded on, but clearly the gungum method works well.

I've been a MIG (GMAW) man for the past 20 years, but I'm tempted to buy a TIG. With the cost of a roll of stainless MIG wire plus a cylinder of Argon, it makes sense to finally upgrade.

I do have a stock K1100LT exhaust I am selling to replace anyones that is cracked. This exhaust does not have a spot for an O2 sensor. It was from a 1993 K1100LT. I am not sure which had and didnt have O2 sensors in them. I also dont know if you can remove the O2 sensor if the bike was originally equiped with one.

Didn't leave it on, it was just to hold the pipes in place whilst welded. It was about an inch forward of where the pipes meet the silencer (muffler)

As for going to meets, just been to Ecclefechan camping weekend & intend to be at the National rally in the Cotswolds at August Bank Holiday.
