well rushing home from work today... trying to beat a light that I know... if I gun it... I can clear.. before it turns yellow...
Only... a minivan.. cutting across the street didnt see me....
I was flying.... and ready to TBone the driver.....
held on with my thighs and hands.....
I was sure I was done....
the minivan never saw me... they were looking at someone in the passenger seat.. they just coasted in front of me...
the bike stopped and I stayed on.... holly shit! that ABS has saved my ass twice now....
stupid me for driving like an idiot... I will not ... will not... ride it like I stole it.... anymore....
I love riding and I love my K1100 RS... and I want to stay alive to ride it again....
I dont know.. just wanted to share my oh shit story with you guys....
I was puckered up and shaking after I started breathing again... anyway....

I've only had one - on the LT. Getting on the freeway, I was looking back to see what I was merging into. When I turned my head back around the truck in front of me had slammed on his brakes. Went full on with both brakes and the ABS brought me to a stop about a foot short of the guy's rear bumper. I could not have braked that well myself I don't think - would've locked up the rear for sure. (Happened on my K75 a time or two when emergency braking.)

That single time was enough to convince me of it's value. You just have to remember it's there and go full on with both brakes.

Had one of those moments myself.

ABS is one of those things kind of like insurance.

You don't really notice it until you need it, then you really, really notice it.

I can also say, "been there, done that". ABS has saved me as well.
I was coming up to an intersection with a green light, I was in the right lane, there was a pickup in the left lane to turn left, oncoming car then proceded to make a left turn in front of me! Shocked Evil or Very Mad
I went from 40 to 0 in like nothing flat. I missed his car, but I lost my balance after I stopped and dropped the bike. Embarassed
Everyone around that witnessed it just shook their heads in disbelief. BUT do you think anyone would stop to help me pick the bike back up! NOOOOOOO. They just went right on by. Glad you are safe to ride another day.

That's pretty crappy of the bystanders. I've helped three people pick up their bikes after oopsies. But, then again, I'm a rider.

Agreed, needless to say I took my sweet time getting the bike up and out of the middle of the intersection. Smile

I had just re-installed my rear tire the day before... I had a nail in it, and took the tire off the bike and had it plugged...
No one would plug a tire, everywhere I went... then this other BMW rider I met at the tire shop told me where to go....
So I took the tire there... the other BMW rider said they take the tire off the rim, and use a mushroom plug , and plug it from the inside.. .and it leave a 3mm stem sticking out the other side.... and he said they guarantee the plug....
anyway I had just got the tire home and put it back on the bike myself, something I had never done before...
Im really glad to see I got the rear brake caliper back on right, and my ABS was working.....
Had it not been working, as in, I did something wrong when putting the rear tire on the previous day, I would not be sitting here....

On a side note, I had a road rage guy, swerving at me one day on my way home from work... It was a three lane road, and it was pouring down rain... and this maniac was screwing with me.. why I dont know....
anyway, my rear tire was on its last leg, with metal tread showing thru the rubber.... and its pouring....
and Im doing about 40 mph when this azzhole, about 5 carlengths ahead, and to the left.... Im in the center.....
He swerves into the center lane ahead, and locks up his breaks.....
I felt my heart in my throat....
And needless to say, the bike stopped on a dime.. in the rain, with a rear tire that was in extremely poor unsafe shape....without skidding or loosing control....
Anyway, Im rambling now...
But glad to see everyone is safe! And we can all learn from each other....

You know, I don't know. I would help anyone pick their bike back up after a drop ... but let me tell you.

The last 2 weekends (I ride with a bunch of BMW people on most Saturdays) our group has had a tip over in a parking lot. Both times have been from a GS rider that doesn't regularly ride with us. The first time I think the guy was an experienced rider (not sure what that means) and the second time it was a newbie on a brand new bike, still has the paper license. Neither time involved anything other than not being able to handle the bike at slow speed. There were enough people around that rushed over to help that there was no need for me.

And another time, just about a year ago now, I purchased a K75RT for a friend of mine in Oregon. I had the bike for about 1.5 months and put 700 miles on it for him (he said I could Embarassed). When he came out to pick it up my wife and I rode back part way with him. In one day he dropped that bike 3 different times. The last time was in a burger joint parking lot and he went down hard. Dropped the bike and then did a running face plant. Must have covered 20-30 feet before he went down. He was completely terrified of that bike.

My point is, what are you doing on a bike that you can not handle at slow speed. We all make mistakes but when you are on such a potentially lethal device you had better be capable of handling it.

Next time do it in situ.. The BMW "TipTop" kit can be installed at the roadside - I always carry one. Easy as pie and will definitely stay put.

I pretty much agree with you but it's the topheaviness at low speed that leads to these drops so aside from crushing your leg I don't think there's that much of a safety issue. (Unless you're on a bike within range of the dropper. Shocked )

Milton, you make a valid point BUT if this were truly the only point to base owning a bike, then I don't think BMW would have had a prayer of selling a single K1200LT. Shocked
Those things are monsters. I wouldn't even think of riding one(because I KNOW that I couldn't handle it) let alone being able to buy one.

Hi there, I was referring to this kit: http://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/product.asp?ProductID=182

It's easy to use and will get you out of trouble. For better or worse, I've done many miles with one of these plugs in my rear tyre. They even have little CO2 cylinders to pump the tyre up! Better than waiting for recovery, or tearing the wheel off Smile

Hi Bill,

I can relate! ABS saved my life once too.

This is only my second bike. I rode a Suzuki GS500E for 10,000 miles. Just long enough for me to figure out what I really needed 1) ABS: to keep me from crashing 2) ENGINE GUARDS: In case I do crash 3) A FAIRING: to keep my skinny body warm 4) SHAFT DRIVE: Maintenance ease & reliability

The K1100LT has fit the bill nicely and I may never need another bike Smile

I've only engaged the ABS on my LT once. Shortly after I bought it. I went to a parking lot that was slightly wet after a rain and intentionally triggered it in with overbraking the rear to see what it would feel like. Chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk.

I know I've come pretty close to triggering it several times since. But not quite. I'm not sure if that means I've been lucky, that I've developed strong braking skills or both, but I'm happy either way! Smile

Old habits are hard to break....been modulating brakes on go-karts, sports cars and motorcycles for way too many years.

Last summer on a Bear Tooth pass left-hander, I got in a little "hot", off in the dirt on right shoulder, looking down a gully, wondering how I'd ever get back up to the road. Didn't even think of clamping the levers and letting abs do it's job.

Pressed hard left and managed not to lock up either wheel, made it through the corner, and I don't think anybody saw me (thank god). I should just practice grabbing hand fulls of brakes until it becomes a habit.

Go find a flat straight dry parking lot. Try the ABS out a few times. It will go chunk, chunk, chunk. It's a good thing to get used to that so that when you have your OMFG moment and slam on the brakes you are not surprised by the chunking.
