Hey guys... Its been a while since I've had any issues with my bike, but Im calling on your collective wisdom once again....

The subject says it all.... Ive spun the lock cylinder to the fuel cap/tank on my K1100 RS SE..... I did NOT break the key, only spun the cylinder....

Its not totally spun... If I turn it clockwise, it moves 90 degrees, and then snaps back to center....

But if I turn the key, to unlock the gas cap, counterclockwise, it turns 180 degrees, but the cap does NOT release.

When I was trying to forcefully turn the key to open the cap, the cylinder did turn, approx. 90 degrees.. but did not spin... and it functions now, as Ive stated above...

It figures... today is my mom's birthday... shes 80.... she just got out of the hospital on Mothers Day, after three weeks in ICU.. now she is in a nursing home type place.. Its nice but... I wont sugar coat it.... anyway, I was getting ready to ride there... about 35 miles away.. so before I left the house I was checking my fuel status.... Ive got about 110 miles on the odometer.... Figure its about 75 miles round trip... so I would definately need to fuel up... cause my baby gulps gas!....That Could be because I ride it like I stole it.. LOL

I have no idea how to fix this lock... Im sure there is a way to engineer getting some fuel in the bike.. but that too is beyond me.....

any suggestions would be most humbly appreciated.....

peace~

There's 2 little prongs at the bottom of the lock core that seat in some PLASTIC divots - the divots are worn.

Usually, unless it's really hosed, you can push down hard on the gas cap and the key to get it to open. Pushing down on the key gives you the best chance of getting the prongs to engage. Pushing down on front of the gas cap reduces the friction on the sprung tang that serves as the latch. So, push down hard on the front of the gas cap then pushing down on the key while turning 90 degress counterclockwise. Still pushing down on the key, pull up the front of the gas cap.

(And wish your mom a Happy Birthday for me.)

So, did it work? Or are you stuck on the side of the road half way home from your mom's?

Hey Duck... hey Group!!!
No luck with what you suggested....pushing on the key and lid..
as a side note, I have used that technique you suggest, in the past to open it....
but where I am at now..... Im beyond that I think....

Is there a way to pull or drill the lock cylinder from the lid...

Then, with some tool, reach in the hole, and pull to release the side locking tabs? to open the cap?

Im down to one more day of driving to work before my fuel light comes on....LOL

So anyone ever have this problem before, or does anyone know of a way to get fuel into my tank thru osmosis?

thanks in advance

Too bad that didn't work. Sounds like it's on it's toast.

Maybe a locksmith knows how to get it out but I suspect they'd have to destroy the lock core to do it.

Other than that I think your stuck with drilling out the lock core yourself - which might be hazardous if you have gas fumes and are dilling which might cause spark.

Another option would be to pry it open using brute force. If you go that route then you'll need to be careful not to dent/scratch your paint.

Hey Group Hey Duck... Well my mechanic used a dent puller device, to pull the cylinder..... he's going to order a new plastic divot part, as you say, and re-use my lock cylinder...... Now, in order to open the gas tank, all you need is a flathead screwdriver, placed in the hole where you place the key, and turn it, and it pops open....

so thank you kindly for your help and in reading this post...

hope this might help someone else in the future...

peace
