I know were a ways out yet, but I wanted to mention its likely to be colder at Hungry Mother then where you are coming from:

http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/NCSPMM:13?locid=NCSPMM:13&from=search_vert
I would stongly suggest electrics, to bring with you, esp in the early mornings and late evening.
Or at least a good riding suit, sweater and heated grips should be fine too!
Mt Mitchell, is free to go up to the observation deck and is directly on the BRP, I am pretty sure it's the highest mountain east of the Mississippi.
Grandfather Mountain is $14.00 per person, it's nicer, but very windy at the top and is somewhat of a challenge riding 2 up and loaded down with luggage. I think, I read somewhere that Grandfather Mountain, has the fastest climb in elevation, in terms of the road going up it vs its height? It's 1 mile high at the top.

I 'll add things as I think of them Were only 4 months away now! _________________ Dom |

Mt Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi. Been there 2 times with some ridding groups. We stopped a few times to put more clothes on. 6684' is cool in the summer. _________________ IBA#42211

Now that rydor has offered to buy all of my beer, I might just show up. (See this thread: http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4224)
If I do come, it will be a last minute type thing based on the following factors:
1) My dad is having surgery in the near future. He's a tough old bugger so I expect a speedy recovery but you never know when somebody's 80.
2) I'll be watching the weather across the country as it approaches. If it looks sucky I ain't gonna do it. I ride to enojy myself, not suffer.
3) Geez, that's a L-O-N-G way from Seattle - especially for someone who is allergic to slab. But if the weather's nice it could make for some nice exploring.
4) How the heck am I going to show up on the other side of the country at a specific time? I'm the kind of person who rides anywhere from 250 to 800 miles a day depending on my whims. What are the chances I'll be there at 3pm Friday?
I'll probably decide around May 10th or so......
I assume there won't be a problem if I want to flop on the floor of one of the cabins or maybe camp so nobody has to endure my snoring. (At least I'll have lots of earplugs to pass around. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hope you make it, Drake! If you do, I'll hook up with you if you take a Southern route.
Hope your dad gets well soon, we'll all be wishing him the best. |

Hi, All,
I am now working at the copper mine in Morenci, AZ driving one of the huge mine trucks (Caterpillar 793, 133 tons empty, 443 tons with a full load). My schedule is wierd, but each 28 day period I have an uninterrupted 7 days off. Unfortunately, the weekend at Hungry Mother is not during one of those weeks. I am exploring the possibility of taking enough vacation to ride to VA and return to meet some of you face to face. If I do, will I get free beer like Drake will? If it matters, I live in El Paso and my home is 7 miles from the Mexican border. Apropos of nothing in particular, Mexico has no trade embargo with a certain island nation in the Caribbean.

Translated: Phil is bringing the 'gars.
What's funny is that the best deals i've ever found on Cubans were in Singapore and Crete. I got a good deal in Costa Rica too but in Crete the R&Js were less than $50 a box.
And I'll give you some of the "free" beer that rydor brings. All you can eat. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, All,
First, I don't know right now if I can make it. Second, if I do, can I crash on somebody's floor? Third, if I do bring any 'gars, it won't be many. The last ones I bought (Montecristo) were near $15 each!

Woohoo!
Were getting close now! I plan on arriving there at around 1500 hours to pick up the key and load Bertha with a few logs to burn Friday night. I will send everyone that mentioned going my cell number. I hope we will have good weather! _________________ Dom |

I'm getting real psyched for this trip!
This will be my first time riding in the mountains and I'm looking forward to wearing off the sides of my tires (after I square them off with a 350 mile ride there.)
I plan on arriving sometime Friday afternoon/early evening.
I'm also hoping Mother Nature is cooperative for us. Here at the coast it's been plenty warm with 70's and 80's, but I'm sure it's a different story up there.
Anything important to bring other than the obvious gear and clothing? It'll be a pretty short trip, so I was planning to pack light.
Next week! Yehaaa! _________________ Steve

I have to admit I havn't been reading this section of the forum very close. This weekend sound teriffic!
I'm trying to reorganize my schedule, is there still floor space? I don't have a tent but I've got a s.b. & p. and ear plugs for Drake's snoring.
I'll be able to make a better commitment by Tuesday.

One week...
The LONG winter has finally passed.
New fluids and tires for the K11RS. Gear ready to pack. Even washed the helmet liner. Route more or less charted. Expect to arrive late afternoon on Friday the 16th.
What are the thoughts for grub? Should we find a local road house to dine Friday night? Cook our own at the campground? Is there a shipment of this on its way?
Looking forward to that morning hosiery coffee...
Are there any others coming from the west that may be interested in sharing some miles?
Anything else?
With great anticipation... _________________ tlp

yeah, you got your gear ready to pack, your bike is all serviced and ready to go, you got good rubber for the trip - what about your nuts? Get out there and torque those exhaust manifold nuts - don't show up with cracked header pipes. You've been warned...
I'm sending all of you my cell phone number.
