| I purchased this K1100lt 1993 in 1996. It has a tank that had been repaired that started to leak on my trip to mexico this winter. The bike was left in Tucson and as my son used it the lank went from a weep to a total failure. I suspect it had been repaired wirh JB weld. I have some high tech epoxy that I am willing to try. Also if any one has repair suggestions. Let me know. |

tsiero - the tanks are aluminum. I don't know where yours is leaking - they usually corrode through way down at the very bottom (where condensate/water/gunk settles) on both sides. Although maybe some people have managed to repair a tank - maybe with some degree of success, best thing is probably to watch for a used one. Ebay, Craig's list, IBMWR.org, etc. _________________ Jim

If you want to order a brand new one, as of a year ago, Berlin had 8 tanks on the shelf. I doubt they're making replacements anymore. A factory painted one will run you about $1375. If you order it primed, it'll be $900 and change.
If you order it painted, do not accept paint defects. The first take on mine had issues under the clear coat. It took over 5 months to get the 2nd take, which was fine, so be prepared for a long wait. FWIW, the first take was done in 3 weeks.
Used is obviously a much cheaper option. It's possible you might be able to get the tank repaired, but I wouldn't know where to start looking. _________________ M N B

The tank for the K11 LT with ABS I is common with the K100 RS/RT/LT of '85 to January '93 manufacture.
(IIRC, the ABS II tank simply has bolt on brackets for extended side panels ?)
They come up weekly on eBay - it may not be the right colour (sorry, color ), but it will be cheap, and you can enquire on the quality before you bid. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

I purchased a gas tank coating and prepped the tank according to the chemical manufacturers instructions. They were to remove the gas, remove all fuel pumps, sending unites, filters, etc. I washes out the tank with a citrus degreaser and rinsed and removed the water with denatured alcohol. Tequilla was too expensive and couldn't be recycled. The sealer was called "Red-Coat". It was pretty viscous and tended to settle at the bottom of the tank and thicken. Next time I would dilute the product and apply two thin coats per the manufacturers instructions.
The big holes were repaired with epoxy before the Red-Kote treatment.
So far, so good

Arrgghh, I hate it when you're working on your bike and discover other issues you weren't aware of.
It appears that my fuel tank is corroding down at the bottom corner, right where the knee pads meet the side panels. If I rub my finger over the corrosion, I can smell gas, but none is actually dripping out.
Is the above info the definetive answers? Look for a used tank?
Other wise the tank and paint is in great shape and I hate to replace it with a used one that probably won't be the same color and might have dents, etc..
Please tell me there is a way to repair it!

Steve - yes, that is a leak, and yes, there is a repair. http://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Restoration/products/12/ Condensation sits down in those corners of the tank and causes the aluminum to oxidize.
There's a guy outside Richmond, VA who can do it if you don't want to. His name is Eppa Wimbish, email: cycledoc59@hotmail.com You can send him the tank, he'll repair and line/coat it for about $80.00 or $90.00.
After losing one fuel tank, I decided it was well worth it to keep dry gas and Stabil in the tank... A word to the wise is sufficient...
Well, I didn't actually lose the tank, but it leaked. It's still repairable. _________________ Jim

Thanks Jim, I read up a bit on that stuff. The price to have the other guy do it is quite reasonable, especially compared to replacing it, considering it's otherwise in good condition, also the kit alone is $75.
Thanks for the link. _________________ Steve

No worries, if I can keep the original tank and not have to deal with painting, etc. then it's worth it. I've sent him an email.
Thanks again! _________________ Steve

Steve - good to know I was right with the first price. Let us know how that works out for you. I imagine if you send it out Monday, you'll have it back before Friday.
I don't know if POR's fuel treatment is any better than Stabil - I probably wouldn't know even if I used it. I guess it's probably good to use some kind of fuel treatment even after you have the tank lined. _________________ Jim
