|

Front brake has not been releasing properly. It's not freezing up but just not releasing when I do. Master cylinder was cleaned up last fall because of a leak.
Decided to replace brake fluid front and back. Back much dirtier than front, worn out back pads and lots of crud on disc and pads. Cleaned everything up, replaced rear pads, took a test ride.
Front brakes still not releasing, rear a little better, but now have flashing ABS lights. Checking codes revealed 2 flashes, rear modulator.
Is there anything I can check re the rear modulator? I kind of hate to reset things without knowing about the problem.
Curiously, with bike on the center stand you can spin the front wheel, apply the front brake and it seems to release immediately. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Bob,
Did you follow the link to IBMWR?
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech.shtml
Lots of ABS diag data there for ABS-I faults.

Thanks for the link Mick, there's a lot to study at that site. Hopefully solution lies not far off. _________________ '93 K1100LT

If you do have a code 2, check the wiring to that modulator really closely.

I purchased the kit to rebuild the rear brake. The front master cylinder screws were bad. Kind of figured the brake fluid hasn't been touched for maybe 4 years? I purchased this k1100RS last July.
Only 1 screw came out the normal way. Attached an EASYOUT to the drill and eased one screw out. The other two I had to drill.
Cleaned up the master cylinder fluid from the brass and aluminum chips. Then bled the front calipers.
Replaced the 2 screws with some I had here... However had to tap or try to clean the threads.
Now to watch for a used master cylinder.
Brake fluid isn't seeping. Not pretty, however it will work until I find something on beemer boneyard or on some list.
take care! _________________ Tim Lindstrom, ab0ts

Does anyone know where the fluid return hole is located in the front master cylinder? I have it apart, cleaned everything up, nothing looks worn, cylinder clean and smooth, piston rubbers OK. I'm trying to get front brakes to release immediately when I release the lever. Recommendations included replacing fluid and cleaning m/c, as well as return hole. Thanks. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Bob,
It is the small hole in the bottom of the reservoir. Make sure you have not adjusted the setscrew in too far on the lever. That will prevent the front brakes from releasing too.

MY RS had a sticking brake lever when I got it. (It was kind of nice to have a parking brake at stop lights on hills. )
I cured mine by pulling the pivot bolt, lubing the non-trheaded part and then not overtightening it when putting it back in. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'm old enough to remember hii-holders on cars ha-ha, how sad is that. Actually the brake lever isn't sticking and when there's no load on the front end, i.e. on the center stand, the brake seems to release immediately and wheel will turn. One thing I found was the front single brake line kind of dangling without the grommet and connection affixed into the bracket just above the radiator grill. _________________ '93 K1100LT
