Hi guys,

Pretty sorry, I work for a dealer and can't get my bike looked at! Our mechanics are booked up for the next three weeks.

Anyway, I have a single ABS light flashing on the left side. The bike is a 1996, ABS 2 machine. The battery is tip top, the wheel sensors are perfect and the battery connections are clean and tight. I have tried the old trick to reset the ABS without any luck. I tried both methods of pressing down on the ABS toggle before and after the ignition is turned on. The wire connection from the middle prong and the ground are also good.

The ABS switch on the dash does even make the light stop flashing and stay on as a solid light. Any thoughts? Many Thanks!!

Dom - is the other bulb burned out? Or have you switched to LED's?

If the other bulb is burned out, try a different battery - you must have access to them...

Dom,
Did you mean to say the switch does NOT stop the flashing? If so you need to remove the switch and fix the broken wire or replace the switch. That switch is what activates the reset.

Mick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I still have the stock bulbs in the dash. For some reason onlyu the left ABS light is flashing the right side is not showing a fault? The ABS switch on the dash is not working as it should to keep the light on as a solid. The ABS light just came on the other day and I have not had any problems in a few years, and then it was the battery being the problem. I have once used the wire trick before and had success. This time around the trick is not working and the switch on the dash is not even working to get rid of the flashing light. It seems very strange that only the left side is flashing?
I wish our shop wasn't so backed up, if I can't fix it, I ll have to break down and bother them to take a look at it.

Thanks again,

Dom,
Fix the switch and then try the reset. Better yet, read the fault code before you reset it. You might also try reseating the ABS relays in your relay box. They sometimes pop out of their sockets and cause strange problems.

Perhaps you've checked this, but make sure the ABS wheel sensors are clean and ensure the clearance properly adjusted. Also, BMW likes to gorilla tighten plastic ties. Check the wiring under the ties for shorts, opens, etc.

If the switch isn't working, usually you just need to resolder the leads to the terminals on the back.

However, sometimes the ocntacts inside the switch corrode and need to be cleaned. In a shoe box, you can pop the black top part of the switch off. Stick a smal screwdriver in from each side to free it from it's pivots. A little silver thing and spring might pop out (hance the show box to catch them) but once you have the switch open, it's pretty obvious how it works and where those go. Then scrape the corrosion off of the conacts and put it back together.

An easier, but not as reliable, method for dirty contacts is to spray tons of WD-40 into the switch and rock it back and forth several times.

Update:

One of the ABS Bulbs was burned out. The BMW GEL battery, which was less then a year old and spent the past six months on the BMW GEL charger, load tested for beans. I bought one of BMW's new high tech chargers last month and tested it on this battery. It can load test, check the vehicles charging system and charge AGM, Gel and Lead Acid batteries. Anyway, I put in the new battery and did the reset trick and wala no problems so far Wink Thanks again guys, I have had the worst luck with the BMW Gel batteries.

Dom - exactly what I figured...

The Panasonic AGM batteries are winners.

Roy,
The '93 K1100LT can use the larger LC-X1228P (like I use in my '93) and the later ones use the smaller LC-X1220P.
I've been using the Panasonics for about 10 years. I replace them every 4 years and have never had one fail.

Kent,
I used to get them from www.digikey.com
Read through this thread:
http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3099&highlight=digikey

I just bought one of these: UB12220 $44.50
http://www.batteriesasap.com/48.html
for my R1100RT when I saw that the Panasonic had gone up to
almost $80.

Roy - yeah, what Mick said - the 1220P. Digikey has a much better price on it than batteryweb.
