Changing the oil on my 94 K1100lt.
In the BMW PDF manual it says the oil drain plug setting is 30nm in the torque setting chart and in the oil change section states 18nm.
I have another source that also states 18nm.
18 nm's seems a little light for a drain plug, which is the correct number?
Just as a comparison, my Multistrada drain plug is 42 nm.
Thanks for any input _________________ You only live once

The PDF manual for the k1/k100 16v says 18nm but the PDF manual for the k1200rs says 30nm.The oil pan has the same part number.

Thanks for the info.
18nm is not much over hand tight, somewhat scary on a drain bolt. _________________ You only live once

I went with 25 nm....happy medium.
Seems good, just a little over snug.
Went for a ride after the oil change to make sure no leaks.
The oil filter cover is a very light torque setting, they recommend about 6 nm. I did maybe about 7 nm..no leaks so far.
This is my first K1100 oil change and when I removed the oil filter cover, oil came dripping out, and a fair amount of it. Is this normal?
The ride I went on was shit!!
Not just rain..I'm talking DRIVING horizontal kick your ass rain!!
Good test for my water proof Joe Rocket jacket. Plugged in the vest and went for a 40 mile ride.
Arrived back home warm and dry...I am now enjoying a alcoholic beverage wishing I lived further south.

Just a little better than snug ought to do it. The filter cover screws aren't very big - doesn't take much to tighten them down. If you get a leak there - change the O-ring.
When you drain the oil, not all of it will run out the drain. The filter is in the oil pan - some of the remaining oil will run out when you take the filter cover off. _________________ Jim

Yep...I bought the oil change kit which included a new rubber 'O' ring and new crush washers for the drain plug, final drive and transmission plug.
Into my second alcoholic beverage now....the final drive and transmission will be tomorrow.
After that I will do a valve clearance check. _________________ You only live once

Manybikes,
It sounds like you had an altogether normal oil change adventure. Now, when you get into the transmission oil change I recommend you cut yourself a piece of plastic from a margerine tub or something and use it to deflect the transmission fluid away from your center stand and into whatever your use to drain into. Otherwise, when the transmission oil is about all out the stream will find its way onto the center stand leg and then down onto the floor to make a big mess to clean up.
Just a tip.

Thanks for the heads up Ed.
That can be a nasty mess, especially with heavier oil.

Yup - I discovered this to my cost last week... oil all over the driveway! A clever BMW trick to lube the mainstand!

I normaly use the filtercover when changing oil + filter and leave the drainplug alone.I never change oil only so no problem with the drainplug.
