Help need again please...
I now have my forks apart, the new stanchions and seal arrived today.
I've worked out now that I need to have the stanchion (fixed tube) in the slider (bottom tube) and then fit the seal over the top - I assume that's to stop it getting damaged when fitting.
How should I then get the seal seated in the sliding tube? I've had a look at the option of using a piece of plastic waste pipe to help seat it, but the stuff I have is the same diameter as the stanchion, so that's no use. Do I need to use the special BMW tool or is there another way to do this?
Help appreciated.
Thanks

I put the seal in first.
In the US at least, a small can of PVC glue is the right diameter for pounding the seal in. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have put the seal in first - using the old seal as a cushion - gently tapping the new seal into position ensuring it is square.
I then put a smear of grease on the inside of the new seal and took care when fitting the stanchion into the slider.
I also smoothed out the edges of a few pits on the stanchion using very fine wet &dry sandpaper with a smear of oil
No problems since.

Tony,
Try a larger diameter of PVC pipe or a large socket will work. And Duck is right, a small metal can will work. And, using your plan of fitting the seal over the fork tube and then installing the slider, there are split drivers available at the dealer to install the seal. just don't forget to slide your dust cover and snap ring up on to the fork tube before you put on the seal.
Good luck,

I'm with tmarshall57, you got the old seal in your hand, use it to drive in the new one. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT
