Does anyone have some pointers for the removal of the main engine drive shaft seal? I am at that point in my spline lube and am intereseted in what techniques others have used.
Thanks,

I wasted a wide bladed and long shanked screwdriver putting a bend in it so that it was about 2'' long from shank to blade. This way I could put a small block of wood across the race and have something to lever against instead of the output shaft. Worked pretty well. _________________ Jethro Tull: Thick as a Brick!

I've used an old brake spoon and a block of wood. I have also drilled a small hole and started a sheet metal screw in the hole. A Claw hammer got that one out easily.

I am looking at the seal they gave me as the replacement and I understand that they will change things over the years but the area that makes the seal is very different. The old one has a lot more surface are than the new one. For those of you that have changed them does the new one look correct?
Thanks,

Thanks Mick,
I didn't want to pull the old one until I was sure I had the right replacement.

The one in the block looks like mine. The other picture was too dark
to see any details. I copied it and enhanced the picture. I've never seen one that looked like that. It even looks rusted.

The one sitting on the piece of wood is the new one. Is this the one that looks like yours? I thought it was rusted too but it wasn't rust. It looks like something that may have been used in molding the rubber onto the metal.
Thanks for the help.

After calling around a couple of different BMW dealerships they all told me that the metal one(the one you have in you block and the one that was in mine) is the old type and the one that I just got(the one on the wood) is the replacement for the old style. I put it in yesterday and it fit fine.

Rich,
Thanks for the feedback. I did mine 2 years ago so they must have changed the style since then.
