In a fullface, I keep the visor cracked a little to let the sound in.
Half helmet, no problem - even with ear plugs in.
No helmet with earplugs - same as half helmet.
On the RS I use an MP3 player on my belt and JVC Marshmallow ear buds.

On my LT with a fullface, shield down I can hear the Alice in Chains clear as day, even doing 80 on the highway.

I have a 1993 K1100rs with no music. I guess it's the MP3 player for me.
