Hi all:

I acquired a 1995 K1100lt last fall with 70k miles on it.
Rode it very little so far but I am looking forward to spending more time on the bike.
I am currently in Scottsdale AZ (just for the winter) and I have been riding my Ducati Multistrada down here.(love the weather)
Question: Is 70k miles a lot for the K series? Anything I should have looked at before I start any long distance trips?
I used to own a R100RT which I put 90k miles on with very few problems, also used to own a K75s but for only 1 season and it had very low miles.

Thanks

hi there, many? Welcome to K11!

At 83,000 miles, it's probably just broken in. The K's are an incredible feat of engineering - built to go hundreds of thousands of miles.

You know you have one of the best bike shops right there in Calgary? http://www.anderwerks.com/

Yep...I know Dave Anders.
His shop is the best.
He did most of the servicing on the K11 I bought, so at this point I am not too concerned about the mileage (but still a little concerned)
I have read posts about the clutch splines or transmissions giving out at this mileage. I also read that this was a concern in the older K series but in 94 or 95 these problems were addressed.
Just tried the edit button to add in this edit...thanks for the info!

Hi, Manybikes,
My first K1100LT was a 1996. I bought it with 14300 miles and sold it with 122k miles. It is still going strong with over 135k miles. I did one spline lube and two valve adjustments on it. They are close to bulletproof. Ride and enjoy, but do your normal maintenance.
Ride Safe,

Thanks for the info Phil:

For sure the maintenance will be far less than my Ducati.
I have noticed that the K1100 is no slouch for power and handling.
The new K1200lt's are just too big for me at this point.
Would love a K1200GT but have to wait a few years to get a used one at a affordable price.

Cheers

Hey welcome aboard.

83K if your splines and valves are up to date you are golden.

With proper care the brick can go 200k+

If your splines are getting dry you will start to notice hard downshifting 4->3 and 3->2.

IF you don't know when the last spline lube was then it's a good precautionary measure - and you'll learn a lot about your bike in the process.

When I get back home I will check with Anderwerks to see if the splines have ever been done.
Looks like something I could attempt myself.
The bike does use a bit of oil (I noticed about half a quart every 1600 miles)
Don't know where it goes as it does not blow blue nor does it leak.
I have been told that this is within normal parameters.
Like I mentioned I only rode the bike about 1500 miles last year so I have not had a chance to get real intimate yet.
More complex than my old R100RT. The old RT was like a tractor compared to the K1100.
There are times that I still miss the old airhead. Very simple and easy to work on. I could set the valves outside my motel room with a cold beer in hand.
I also added a laminar lip to the windshield, this eliminated a lot of the buffeting at higher speeds.
Next on my list will be the stereo system...stock one is not very good.
Any suggestions on what to replace it with would be welcome.

BTW..I am in Scottsdale and enjoying Arizona bike week.
Lots of rides, parties and events.
Bit out of place with my Duc in a sea of Harley's but still having a blast.
I must say that Americans have always treated me extremely well. Great country with great people.

Cheers
Dean

That's normal. Nothing to worry about. But DO keep your eye on the sight glass and top it off to two thirds level.

I swapped in a Pioneer MP3 CD player and modified their marine remote to use on the hanblebars. A fair amount of work but well worth it IMO:

When you installed the Pioneer did you also put in different speakers?
Or are the factory speakers adequate for boosted power?

Thnx

Hi, Manybikes,
I had 2 K1100LT's, a '96 and a '95. I bought the '96 in '97 and put 122k miles on it. I used many different oils throughout the years. It did not matter which oil I used, dino squeezings or synthetic, it consumed oil at a rate of 1 qt. every 3k-4k miles. The second bike, the '95, I bought in '05 with less than 5k miles on it. Up to 20k, I used a 20w50 SG oil I found in Mexico (Soriana's store brand), then switched to Mobil 1 15w50. At 28014 I hit a deer at 65mph. Up until that time, I never had to add any oil. So the engines do vary, but half a qt. in 1600 miles sounds normal to me.

Thanks for the info Phil

The fact that you replied tells me you survived hitting the deer!
That has always scared the hell out of me, I have had some close calls.
When I tour in the mountains I avoid night travel as much as possible.
They can even be bad during the day but at least you have better visiblility to spot them.

Cheers

My ABS is on the firtz so I didn';t have it coming down the coast. On Sunday night I rounded a turn and I'd just dimmed my lights for the car ahead of me. Sure enough I come around a corner and there's a frickin' dumbass doe right in the middle of my line. As I braked, all I could think was "F***, I wish my ABS worked." Shocked

Knowing they're unpredictable, I didn't swerve and just aimed right for her. She jumped to the side when I was about 3 feet away. It wouldn't have been too bad since I had time to sctub off most of my speed but still would not have been fun.

I HATE DEER! What the hell is there to eat in the middle of the road anyhow? Question

I hate deer TOO, but have to add moose to the list.

Around here in the Spring the deer and sometimes moose are out in the road licking salt left over from winter ice control.

5 years ago, a friend of ours was killed when he hit a moose while riding his R90 on the "Kanc" here in NH

Deer adhere to the following rules of the road:

Stop, look, listen...then cross regardless!!

I don't get it, when you go hunting and you accidently snap a twig half a mile away they run like hell.
What's up with traffic noise?
I avoid night travel whenever possible in Deer country....which is damn near all of North America!
