|
|
So where does fuse 8 wiring go? My battery was dying after about a week if I didn't have the tender on. With my trusty meter I found about 200mA load on fuse 8. I pulled it and everything appears to be working as normal. I did pull the ABS brain, modulators, and relays so I'm not sure if it's related.
I can't seem to follow out the schematic to what it feeds. Any ideas?
Thanks,

hello there, Mark. A late night trip out to the bike to get the owner's manual revealed the following:
1 Instrument cluster, rear/brake lights 2 Parking light 3 Indicator lights, clock 4 Power socket 5 Motronic 6 Fuel pump 7 Two-tone horns, fan 8 Special equipment option 9 Special equipment option 10 Special equipment option (all are) 15A
The above is courtesy of BMW - Rider's Manual US Models K110RS K1100LT page 60
Guess that doesn't help you much though, does it? You'll have to follow the lead from the fuse block.
Isn't 200 MAh a pretty low draw? How old is your battery? Is it time for a new one? _________________ Jim

Yes, 200ma is about 100X the normal key-off drain. Normal is 2.1-3.6ma
What bike you working on?

Comms system? If I forget to unplug my helmet, It flattens the battery in 2 days. _________________ Regards Tim,

It's the K1100LT.....Sorry Mick I should have specified.
Thanks for the info Jim...I really don't want to start tearing into the harness, especially since it's working fine with fuse 8 pulled, it just bugs me.
No alarm and comm system has an off toggle switch.
The Odyssey battery is about a year and a half old, should be good. I usually have it on tender that I swap around on the bike.
I'm not sure but it seems to have started after I pulled the ABS system, but I don't see any connection on the diagrams.
Thanks for the replies.....

Mark,
The radio and the map light circuit are both fed from Fuse #8 on the '94-97 LT's. Do you have 'any' other circuits fed from the map light? It's a common place to tap for power.

When you leave the bike, are you engaging the steering lock? If not, the radio, dash & top box lamps will still be powered. When I had my last KLT the lock would not go to that position until I serviced the lock. Similarly, if one turns the key too far anticlockwise, the parking lights will be illuminated. I've done that too. _________________ Regards Tim,

OK we're on to something. My K1100lt is a '93.
I pulled the map light and didn't see any other wires tapped at the light. At first it did not work, put in fuse 8 it worked. I find the light not very useful so I didn't even know it was not working with the fuse out .
I'm not in the habit of using the steering lock. My stock radio works fine (well as good as a BMW radio HA) but I didn't realize it had lamps (when in use the cover is on). How are the radio lights switched?
I was in the dash to wire in some aux light switches and install some speakers in the past maybe I caused the problem then. Don't plan to go back in for a while but when I do I'll be checking out the map light and radio wires.
Thanks Mick and Tim!!

Mark - the light in the radio comes on when you click the radio on. Do you have a handlebar remote? If you do, there should be a red light on the switch to tell you the remote is on - that also alerts you to the fact the radio is on.
Doesn't the radio time out if you leave it on? I know the hazard flashers do. _________________ Jim

No,
The radio will stay on till the battery dies if the ignition is in the OFF, NOT LOCKED position if the radio is left on. Also, the LED on the remote should also illuminate, unless it is burned out.
Mark,
Listen closely when you install F8, do you hear a click from any of the relays you added? If so, one of your relays might be draining the battery. Now it's just a step-by-step process to see what is being powered by the F8 circuit.
Battery drain with all switches off and the steering locked (or turned just CCW past OFF) should be about 2.7-3.7ma between battery negative post and your disconnected ground cable. Do NOT try to start the bike with a milliamp meter connected.

Tony - 'splain "string lock" please?
The radio stays on with the key set to OFF - or what would more likely be ACC (accessory) on the car. When you lock the bike, it should cut the power to everything.
All those little white letters on the round black thing the key fits in the middle of are gone on my K... _________________ Jim
