I need some advise before I do a job that I'm not to sure if I need to it. Thanks in advance.......

Issue, I was reading up on trans fliud levels to figure out how much to put in (besides the .8l manual answer), physical measurment and found a thread on shifting issues. My bike has had shifing issues ever since I bought it. It has a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd above 4000 RPM and does not want to shift from 3rd to 2nd at that RPM either. I have to be at lower RPM's to shift in those gears. I just got done changing the trans fliud and it seemed a little low - maybe 150-200 ml low. Could this cause the shifting issues?

This brings me to my issue - Clutch splines. I currently have all the plastic off the bike, just got done putting my newly powder coated wheels back on the bike along with the new stainless brake lines. I have read that the rear end has to come apart and the clutch splines need to be greased. I know that now is the time to due something like this if I need to but I don't know if I should - please advise.

I would of posted pictures if I knew how to insert them!

Hi Michael, what year and how many miles on your ride? That would tell us a lot. As to posting pics, set up a free account on http://photobucket.com/ or someplace similar. Hard shifting is a sign that the splines need lubed but if your bike has less than say 50k it's probably not the issue.

I just bought the bike last fall. Its a 93' 1100RS. I would like to start riding about 5000-10000 miles a year and use the bike as a daily rider. The bike has 31,000 miles on it. From what I have read, the grease could of dried up Question

Yes, lube the splines. The bike is 15 years old - and so is the factory lube in there. 94 and later have harder splines so it's not as much of an issue but still needs to be done at 40k.

If that doesn't do it try synthetic in the tranny and final drive. That smooths things up. Also check clutch adjustment although that would probably affect all shifts.

Well - they needed to be greased. Very Happy

The job wasn't as hard as I thought it was, just a little longer - about 10 hours. Below is a picture of the bike apart.

The next two are showing the "DRY" splines. They needed to be cleaned and re-greased.

The next is the greasing of the drive shafts splines - and they were as dry as a bone. Notice the alignment line I put across the top spline to line up with another alignment line I put on the drive shaft tube. I don't know how else to align those pieces correctly without doing something like this. I didn't see any other way of doing this Question

This last picture is the bike back together. I'm waiting for my plastic to get back from the painters.

Only one thing went wrong with this whole job. My bike slide off the stand and I tried to stop it and it rolled down onto the ground Sad

. It ended up on the left side and I had a tool on the ground right where the bottom corner of the valve cover ended up. Embarassed

It fell just hard enough to dent the with a small crack. And guess what - It leaks. Even though I'm done with one job another one begins. Anyone have a valve cover for sale? I was going to take the cover off and get it welded if I can't find a new one. Just thought I would share my experience. Thanks.

1. Resize your pics if possible. It's real hard to see the great work you did.

2. You are off to a fantastic start on the RS. Nothing like jumping in feet first with a spline lube!

3. Welcome to the site...and at least you didn't drop it with the plastics on.

Sorry for the over-sized pictures.... I had my valve cover welded up today and plan on being back on the bike tomorrow. The painter showed me the paint on Monday - White-white, and an electric metallic blue. The blue was awsome Very Happy

. He also showed me the pearl powder he is adding the the paint - again - I it was awsome!! The white will shine with some blue pearl and the blue with shine showing off the white pearl color. I will post some picture (the correct size) when the bike is finished.

While you can get to it, and are waiting on parts, how about lightly sanding the rusty parts, apply this stuff, and slap some spray bomb on there. Cool
