I noticed in the owners manual that you should take off the earth cable on top of the gearbox area before taking out battery ??
Well I was thinking- rather than taking off a battery connection this would be easier on order to save battery without taking it out! !
Anybody know if that would have the same affect as disconnecting battery????? I was planning on connecting a short length of cable to the bolt so I could disconnect this more easily without having to poke about in there. Please
Does that make sense? |

I fink that is well OTT. IMNSHO all one should do is to ensure that when disconnecting, take off the earth (ground) first. Re-connecting, earth last. This prevents any possibility of the spanner (wrench) flashing between the +12 & the frame.
If you were to just remove the "top of gearbox" cable, there would still be connections to the ABS, ECU case & the relay box. Just done my clutch, but had jump leads to battery tags to run the radio, which still works with the gearbox & also the gbox connection missing.

The test for this would be to remove the cable you are refering to.
Then put an ohm meter between the negative (assumed grounded terminal) and the frame. If there is continuity then the "earth" ground has not been totally removed. and the theory is not going to work. _________________ Ken in Denver |

hi Al - you don't say which bike you're working on - I have to assume it's some sort of K bike. You also don't say where you are, but since you say "earth" instead of ground, I'll assume you're somewhere in the UK, or some country that used to be part of the UK.
I only have a US K1100 RS/LT manual. I quote from it:
"Removing and Installing battery
Tools required
Allen keys - 4mm
Open ended wrench - 10mm
Screwdriver with reversible blade
Procedure for removing battery
1 ) Place motorcycle on center stand
2 ) Switch off Ignition
3 ) Open the dualseat
4 ) Remove right battery cover
5 ) Disconnect earth/ground (1) on plug of injection control unit
6 ) After releasing the snap catch, detach plug from injection control unit (I always skip this step and leave it plugged in - doesn't seem to hurt anything)
7 ) Remove retaining screw from the injection control unit
8 ) Remove the injection control unit by lifting out backwards and upwards
9 ) Remove battery holder retaining screws
10) Remove retaining plate
11) Use a screwdriver to lift up protective cap at positive terminal
12) Disconnect battery cables
first of all from negative terminal
then from positive terminal
13) Pull battery ventilation hose out of battery housing
14) Lift out battery to the rear/up the way"
I don't see any need to take the earth cable loose on the gearbox. Just remove it from the battery first, positive second, and always reverse when reinstalling - positive first, negative second.
Best thing to preserve a battery is keep some kind of slow charger on it. _________________ Jim

Hi Jim you used to be part of the Empire dont forget !
Also all lead acid batteries will self discharge slowly even if they are disconnected completely .

Yeah - but when we threw all that tea in the harbor, we quit calling "earth" "earth" at that very moment and started calling it "ground".
Canadian here - no problem with the Empire. _________________ Jim

Hi folks,
I used to say 'greetings from Ireland' but nobody ever took notice.
I even tried 'greetings from sunny Ireland' ! ! !
I will study above and do a test.
It might take a while to get to though.
It's a K1100LTSE 1994
Thanks
Al. |
