Hi all,
I wondered whether anyone might point me in the right direction for a shaky K1100LT.
Due to a rear puncture I decided to change both tyres from Bridgestone BT45s to Avons, Azaro rear and Storm front (as they don't do the fitment in an Azaro).
Before the change all was good with the handling (well within K limits  ) and nice and smooth at the front.
Since the change I've a shake from the bars between 40 and 60 mph. I took the front wheel back to the tyre depot and asked them to recheck the balance, a little out, now fine, but the shake is still there.
Any ideas out there what to check next?

Search this thread, Owsrich had a similar problem a while back, it was the tire.

ok... i went out to scuff the new front in for a 350mi 2 up to the san jacinto tram tomorrow... i get it up to 40mph and need to adjust my glove... i took both hands off and wow... wobble... so i mess around with speed and determine i have a wobble between 40mph and 50mph...
slight wobble at 40 and very aggressive wobble at 50mph... its good below 40 and above 50... i took it to 90... seems good except that 40 to 50 spread...
i did the steering bearing check... stays in middle... doesnt move left or right... no notchy feeling... look it all over... all looks good... wheel rolls true...
so i go back to the dealer... they said the would look at it... i asked the service manage to take it out for a ride to see for himself... he declined... he was very busy because the place was packed... so no san jacinto tram tomorrow...
anyway... this thing has always been straight and true with no shake or wobble or anything... the only change is the front tire... im wondering what they are gonna say now... perhaps i need a ball joint diagnostic...
so... this a very highly respected socal dealer with a reputation for taking care of its customers for decades... we shall see how they treat the underfunded out of towner...

ok... they called and said they they realigned the axle... checked the tire and the wheel for balance and all that... all was ok...
they said i needed a steering head bearing and new fork springs and new fork oil and the new tire needed to be wore in...
i asked if it still had the wobble after realigning the axle... the answer was i dont know... i asked if they rode it... they had not...
i went and picked it up... checked the steering head bearing with the center stand fall left fall right test... its smooth and it does not move at all by itself...
i took a close look at the forks and they look good and feel good... they got new oil and seals in july...
i felt no wobble through the bars from 0 to 40mph... progressively worse wobble at 40 to 50 hands off the bars...

however... i still have the front tire wobble... i have enough miles on it now to see a pronounced strip of rubber in the center that is wearing differently than the sides... exactly opposite as the tire that was replaced under warranty with a bad left side radial...
check this out... with the bike on the center stand the back tire will spin... but he pointed out that after it gets hot it rubs the swing arm... he showed me that the rear tire would spin when cold... then after a 1/4 hour on the slab it would not spin... it is rubbing ever so slightly and i can actually see the shiny line on the side of the tire now...
he said that this dual rubber compound concept isnt working for me... he said the sidewalls have given up... squishing the tire flatter than intended... causing the rub once it expands after some miles... it maybe because most of our riding is 2 up with loaded boxes... but he thinks its a tire problem... it was rubbing 1 up after only 15 minutes on the slab... he told me about the dual compound concept failing miserably years ago and he thinks it does not have much of a chance succeeding on heavier bikes this time around...

got new pilot roads installed this morning... then slabbed it to what has become our regular ride... the santiago canyon area... theres donkeys down in there you know...
i know new tires always feel good... but after the nightmare i have had with the avons... im back to straight and true and smooth at all speeds... i forgot what it was like to have a proper riding machine...
avon said they would send me another set of tires... but you know... this would have been my 3rd set since may... i just aint messing with them anymore... i can say they do stand behind their product... their service and interaction is good... its just there product that was not working for us...

i got 3k on the pilot roads... they are working for me...
the avon storms did not... twice back to back... i will not be looking at avons again anytime soon...

I put Azaros on my LT and they ride just fine.
I stole the rear wheel with almost new Azaro off of my parts RS to put on my rider RS and it works fine too.
Even the front Azaro on the RS when I bought it, though mounted BACKWARDS by the dorks at Ventura BMW, rode very nicely - including a very spirited romp up Hwy 1 from LA to SF.. Although being mounted backwards, the tread wear was funky. (I replaced it once I got to SF.)

im not thinking all avons are crap... im thinking the avon storms i got had problems...
i read on the forum where some folks are getting 7k and 9k on the same size and style i had without any problems...
i just would not get them again...

I have no experience with ANY tires except the Dunlop K491 Elites that I mounted 9K miles ago.
So far I'm happy...but I agree: 2 bad sets  of Avons and I would not want to give 'em a 3rd try. 
I have found out this riding 30 yrs; once you find something you are comfortable with like a tire brand, stick with it. You'll instinctively know with a familiar brand when something has gone wrong.
In my early years I was broke so I began with Continentals, then Metzlers, then Goodyear, then etc etc. After about 5 yrs, guess what? Went back to Contis and said they are my brand to keep.

On any tire that is newly mounted, it is a good idea to carefully check that the tire bead is FULLY seated onto the rim. Many tires have a slight ridge of rubber that should be a fraction of an inch from the rim all the way around the circumference, both sides.
I have mounted some large 3+ inch downhill mountain bike tires that would hang up in one small area of the rim. It would inflate look OK until it began to spin fast- then a pronounced wobble would be felt. Placing the bike on a stand, you could see lateral runout on the tire if you sighted down the front of the tire.
Just a thought.

FWIW I've been very happy with Pilot Roads on my bike.
I've never had a bad one.
They're not a very sticky tire, if that's what you're looking for. They are however, an excellant touring tire and have enough grip in the turns for how I ride.

How many miles you get out of a set Shogs?
I typically get 12-14k miles out of a set of Lasertecs.

8k-10k 
They are not as hard as the Lasertecs I would imagine.
Steve mounts a super sticky tire on his K1200R, and gets about 2000-3000 miles out of a set. And NO chicken strips

Never seen 'em on my bike... 
I contacted Avon Tyres about this problem and got a standard corporate speak reply about being a trade only manufacturer and that I should contact the depot I bought the tyres from.
There's irony here: on the day I was having these tyres fitted, the BMW Club was having a tour of the Coopers Tyres (Avon) factory in Melksham, UK, which is all of 40 miles away from me! 
Guess I'll just have to change my riding style to exclude that band between 40 and 60mph... honest officer, the tyres made me do it...
